Introduction to the Meaning and Uses of Almandine Garnet
Almandine Garnet unites the energy and passions of scarlet and red with the more muted, earthy overtones of brown, like fire reflected in a deep sultry wine. It is intimately tied to the Earth, and is a talisman of protection and unyielding strength, both physically and intellectually.
Almandine is known as a Stone of Tangible Truth. It assists in manifesting a realistic version of the physical world. [Simmons, 169] Its energy helps alleviate worry, panic and fear, and assists in maintaining a calm connection to the present. It allows one to perceive the absolute support of the Universe. [Ahsian, 170] Its intellectual properties also make it useful to those exploring the fields of astronomy, astrology, and mathematics. [Melody, 105]
Almandine Garnet is an iron aluminum silicate, its name derived from the town of Almandine in Asia Minor. [Simmons, 169] It is often found in nature mixed with Pyrope Garnet (See the Pyrope Garnet page).
Types of Almandine Garnet include Carbuncle, Merelini Mint Garnet, Thai Garnet, Grandite, and Precious Garnet. Some rare Almandine crystals from India or Idaho have asbestos inclusions that create a highly prized, star-like effect when faceted. Precious, or Noble Garnet, is deep red and transparent. [Eason, 74][Fernie, 156] Brown and opaque Almandine is ferrous and aluminum-like with traces of manganese and/or magnesium. [Megemont, 87] All have the metaphysical properties listed on the Garnet page, as well as the additional properties listed below.

All Garnets honor Sekhmet, the Egyptian Goddess of War. She is the most powerful goddess of Lower Egypt, and is usually depicted with the head of a lion and the body of a beautiful woman.
Almandine Garnet also honors Demeter, the Greek Goddess of the Harvest. She brings an end to the barren wintertime, filling the fields with life-giving grain.
Red Garnet honors Hestia, the Goddess of Home and Hearth, because of its fire element and use for protection and strength.
There are several ways to find an appropriate birthstone. The traditional one is listed first. These are from the popular lists that most people are familiar with. The second way is to find your natural birthstone by the color wheel of life. You can click on the Natural Birthstone graphic below to learn more. Finally many people use the traditional stones of the Zodiac.
In this section you will find information on all three approaches.
Garnets including Almandine, are the traditional birthstone of those born in January.
Almandine Garnet which is scarlet in color, is one of the natural birthstones of those born in the first month of autumn (September 23 - October 21). Scarlet crystals bring you strength, vitality, willpower and dedication.
Almandine which is red in color, is the natural birthstone of those born in mid-autumn (October 22–November 20). Red crystals bring you energy, courage, passion, and love.
Garnet is the zodiac stone for those born under the sign Aquarius, the mid-winter season between January 20 and February 18. Aquarians desire the truth of all things and have a gift for art and music.
Wikipedia tells us Aquarius is considered a "masculine", positive (extrovert) sign. It is also considered an air sign and is one of four fixed signs. Aquarius has been traditionally ruled by the planet Saturn, and, since its discovery, Uranus has been considered a modern ruler of this sign. Being the eleventh sign of the zodiac, Aquarius is associated with the astrological 11th house.
Almandine Amulets and Talismans
The Crusaders wore Almandine Garnet rings to keep them safe. [Eason, 74]
As an amulet, Garnet was worn on the body for strong protection against poisons. [Mella, 85]
As a member of the Garnet family, Almandine is an Enhancer Strengthener crystal. Enhancers have internal crystal lattices of perfect cubic symmetry and internal harmony. As "building block" talismans, their internal structure of perfect crystal lattices help us focus our efforts to build on our successes and enhance our lives.
Strengtheners are crystals that are chemically formed in the island silicate class. This class of minerals forms very compact materials that are strong, resistant, and unyielding. Strengthener crystals provide you with the energy to resist temptations and resist distractions from your goals. Garnets are the best known Strengtheners and the perfect talismans to keep us on course.
Almandine Garnets have fire energy. Fire energy is the energy of enthusiasm, warmth, brightness, illumination and activity. It is Yang in nature. It is the energy of heat, action, emotion and passion - of ideas, of concepts, and sex.
It is traditionally associated with the south area of a home or room. Like red and scarlet gemstones, it is to be used sparingly. Use Orange Almandine Garnet as an accent and as an accessory in rooms where high energy is needed. Use the red hues of Almandine crystals to bring the sun's power and the fire element's energy to your life and home.
Almandine in Ancient Lore and Legend
Garnets the color of fire were also called Carbuncles (from fire-coals), and the Hebrew name for the carbuncle was Bareketh (flashing stone) or Barak (lightning). It was one of the twelve stones in the breastplate of the High Priest.
Eastern legends assert that a carbuncle was suspended by Noah, in the Ark, to diffuse light. The Greeks called the carbuncle the Lamp Stone and it was said, if hung around the neck, to give the power of seeing in the dark. If tied upon the forehead, it was further reported to cure fluxations of the eyes. [Fernie, 158-159][Mella, 86]
