Grossular Garnets (including Hessonite, African Jade, and Tsavorite)
Introduction to the Meaning and Uses of African Jade, Tsavorite, and Grossular Garnet
Grossular Garnet exemplifies hope, empowerment, and all things nurturing from Mother Earth. In shades as varied as a magnificent sunrise, to the lush and verdant greens of growth and renewal, it is a stone of prosperity and abundance; encouraging gratitude and service to others.
Grossular Garnet is a calcium aluminum silicate, and ranges in color from light to dark yellow, gold, orange, scarlet and red, with the more popular shades being green. Its name is derived from the latin word for gooseberries, because of the light-green similarity of colors to the berries. [Simmons, 166]
As a potent prosperity stone, Grossular Garnet is healing of all limitations on the physical level, in health or wealth. Green Garnet carries an especially regenerative energy, and is excellent for those who’ve had money problems and wish to reform. [Ahsian, 167] As a stone of strength, Grossular Garnet will benefit new business ventures, promoting growth and warm client contact. [Eason, 140] It strengthens stability in lawsuits and challenges, transforming lower forms of response and reaction to loving forms of reply. [Melody, 303]
Grossular Garnet enhances relaxation and going with the flow, and inspires service and cooperation. [Hall, 138] It also injects some romance and fun into an over-practical life, boosting passion and energy in a love weighed down by worry. [Eason, 140]
The Types of Grossular Garnets
African Green Garnet (African Jade) – from Mali; green crystals helpful for bringing one’s visions into reality. Their vibrational pattern creates confidence and motivation to get down to business and make things happen. [Simmons, 166] This stone encourages prosperity, healing the root of scarcity-mindedness, and reveals the abundance the Earth and Universe provide. [Ahsian, 167] It is attuned to the Heart Chakra.
Hessonite (Cinnamon Stone) – orange to dark brown-orange, and reddish-brown crystal; relatively rare. Hessonite is called the Cinnamon Stone, not only for its color, but because of the land of spices where it originated–Ceylon, now called Sri Lanka. It brings success in self-initiated businesses based on an original idea or unfilled market niche, and inspires and brings out artistic expression, even in the seemingly untalented. [Eason, 86] Associated with the Sacral Chakra, Hessonite promotes self-respect and clarity of emotions, and soothes emotional agitation. [Gienger, 43] This stone opens the intuition and psychic center, and is used for out-of-body journeys, carrying you to your destination. [Hall, 138]
Tsavorite – pale to emerald green; rare. Tsavorite is the name used most frequently in the USA. In Europe it is called tsavolite. [Eason, 272] It is restorative and freeing, bringing new strength in difficult phases of life. [Gienger,44] From Kenya, this gem-grade Garnet is the most energetically focused of the Grossular varieties. It is a stone of wealth in all its positive aspects–financial, creative, emotional, artistic and even physical health. Attuned to the pure Green ray, Tsavorite rivals emerald in its power and beauty. It can open and cleanse the Heart Chakra, increasing zest and vitality, and inducing feelings of charity and benevolence. Tsavorite can transmit its qualities through the eyes of anyone who sees it, so wearing it in the workplace uplifts everyone who comes in contact. [Simmons, 166]

Grossular Garnet Physical Healing Energy
Grossular Garnet is an important aid in recovery from illness or trauma, and assists the body in cellular regeneration. [Ahsian, 167] It is thought to fortify the liver and kidneys, regulate fat metabolism, and detoxify and alleviate inflammations throughout the skin and mucous membranes. It helps with rheumatism and arthritis, and prevents arteriosclerosis. [Gienger, 43][Hall, 138]
Grossular Garnet is said to be good for the immune and respiratory system, and protects against highly infectious diseases. It stimulates the blood, and is a good stone to carry on a plane to prevent deep vein thrombosis. [Eason, 140] Grossular Garnet is particularly beneficial in assimilation of Vitamin A. [Melody, 303]
Hessonite heals the olfactory system, and draws off negative influences that cause ill health. It also regulates hormone production, reducing infertility and impotence. [Hall, 138][Eason, 140]
Grossular Garnet Emotional Healing Energy
Grossular Garnet is an excellent crystal to soothe and reduce emotional extremes, especially if all your previous relationships have been a drama. Tsavorite, in its renewing shades of green, releases old emotional trauma or feelings of inadequacy, and encourages socialization and new trust. Warm, orange Hessonite helps those who have spent too much of their lives alone to cope with mainstream life. [Eason, 86,140, 272]
Grossular Garnet aids amendment and fosters community spirit. It supports imagination and creativity in social situations [Gienger, 42], and inspires the ideal of service through cooperative effort. [Melody, 303]
Grossular Garnet is powerful for overcoming scarcity-mindedness, money panic and other forms of financial anxiety. [Ahsian, 167]
Green Grossular Garnet is associated with the Heart Chakra, located near the center of the breastbone. It regulates our interaction with the external world and controls what we embrace and what we resist. It gives us the balancing ability to be ourselves within the environment. When the heart chakra is out of balance you may feel either controlling or controlled in a relationship, and become critical of the little foibles of others. You may well find yourself having inappropriately strong emotional responses to everyday external stimuli. Green crystal energy is used to resolve blockages and to re-balance the heart chakra, helping us understand our own needs and emotions clearly. We can deal with the ebbs and flows of emotional relationships, understand their cyclic nature, and accept the changes.
Yellow Grossular Garnet activates the Solar Plexus Chakra, the energy distribution center and the chakra of relationships. This chakra is located between the ribcage and navel, and controls the immune and digestive systems. When in balance physically, you have strength to fight infections, are free of allergic reactions, and are able to use the nutrients you ingest. When the solar plexus is out of balance spiritually, you feel fear – of the disappointment or displeasure of others or to subordinating your life and pleasures to the will of others. Spiritually, when the solar plexus is in balance you are free to interpret the world through your own thoughts and emotions and not live in fear of violating the dictums of others.
The Gold and Orange shades of Grossular Garnet identify with the Sacral Chakra, or Second Chakra, located below the naval and above the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. It controls the flow of energy and is the center of gravity of the body. It is the center of the Life Force of the body, and controls the flow of information from the body to the mind and from the mind to the body. Gut feelings, intuition, and other “non-linear” communication comes from this chakra. When it is out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as confusion, over dependency on others, repression of feelings, inability to feel joy, fear of sensuality or sex, and frustration. When it is in balance you have grace, feel pleasure in life, find you are flexible and can “go with the flow” and do so in good spirit.
In shades of red, Grossular Garnet is also a powerful ally in healing Base Chakra blockages and traumas, aiding one in recovering vital information about oneself and one’s purpose on Earth. [Ahsian, 167] The Base, or Root Chakra, is located at the base of the spine, and controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and movement. It is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the body. When physically out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as lethargy, low levels of activity, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation. When its spiritual energies are out of balance, you will feel flighty, disconnected from reality, and distant. When the Base Chakra is in balance, the physical body regains its strength and stamina, and the spiritual energy is rekindled in the form of security and sense of one’s own power. It often leads to independence and spontaneous leadership.
Grossular Garnet Spiritual Energy
Grossular Garnet teaches abundance, from physical wealth to spiritual connection to the Divine, and helps us receive sustenance on all levels of our experience. It aids us in celebrating what one has and learning gratitude. [Ahsian, 167]
Grossular Garnet is particularly useful for companines offering spiritual products or services to maintain the right atmosphere and ethos, but at the same time to make the necessary profit to be viable. Carry colorless Grossular Garnet to increase chances of being recognized for your talents. Red or Orange Grossular Garnet is particularly protective against abusive neighbors or physical threats, acting as an absorbing shield and reflecting back nastiness. [Eason, 140]
Wear Tsavorite or natural Green Garnet as a necklace or ring, or carry near the heart to help you recognize your own blessings and to work to obtain whatever is missing. Green Garnets reduce rivalries at work and prevent over-fierce competition between siblings in the home. Keep Tsavorite or any natural green Garnet near entrances to protect rural homes. [Eason, 272]
Grossular Garnets range in color from light to dark yellow, gold, orange, scarlet and red, with the more popular shades being green. The healing rays of these stones are potent and empowering.
Green Grossular Garnet is a “growth crystal” – a powerful conduit of the earth’s Life Force of birth, development, and creation, and of the power of nature’s constant renewal. It is a potent aid in nurturing, whether of fledgling family relationships or a new business venture. Green Garnet is perfect for keeping a venture on course, a project on schedule, and life on track. Lighter Green crystals promote spiritual growth and renewed commitment to a higher purpose.
Yellow Grossular Garnet brings the power to solidify new interests and new relationships, helping you to see things in a different light. It adds clarity, waking things up and adding zest, optimism, and meaning to your life and relationships. Light Yellow crystals ensure that new relationships get off to a good start by aiding in the establishment of good communication. They help you focus on the needs of the person or group you are getting to know. Dark Yellow Garnet is an excellent aid when decisiveness, precision, or persuasiveness is needed.
Gold Grossular Garnet brings success, enthusiasm, happiness, and power. It is traditionally the color of kings, riches, and the sun. Gold touches a deep part of our minds, conjuring up images of mystical places and adventure. Light Gold crystals provide us with the simple pleasures of life–cheerfulness and contentment. Dark Gold Garnet has a deeper, more pronounced sense of devotion and commitment, providing us with a mature enthusiasm and ability to share a lifelong commitment of care and love.
Orange Grossular Garnet brings joy and friendship, pleasure, and family togetherness. It is a happy and sharing stone, integrating the parts of our communal lives, bringing things and people together. It is a stone of physical pleasure and intimacy. In lighter shades, Orange Garnet promotes companionship and affection, while the darker crystals deepen the sense of belonging and home.
Scarlet Grossular Garnet reflects the color of strength and vitality, both physical and spiritual. Scarlet crystals are amulets of protection from physical harm. They help overcome fear and improve self-reliance, and are the crystals of victory, success, and skill. Dark Scarlet Garnets are the key to the physical pleasures of maturity—in love, in life, and in relationships.
Red Grossular Garnet brings a self-confidence built on fearlessness. It reflects the color of passion, energy, and life. It motivates. It is a very strong color—the color of fire and blood. Dark Red crystals embody strong, deep feelings, durable energy and quiet passion. It is a masculine color, particularly useful for increasing devotion and seeing the seriousness of life.
Grossular Garnet enhances fertility when the consciousness is specifically directed toward that goal during meditation with this mineral. [Melody, 303]
Meditation with Tsavorite facilitates communication with higher spiritual realms, and regular meditative use of this crystal increases psychic awareness, particularly intuition. [Eason, 272]

Hessonite Grossular Garnet has been in use since the times of Ancient Rome and Greece as a talisman to attract abundance, joy and health. [Eason, 86]
As a member of the Garnet family, Grossular Garnet is an Enhancer Strengthener crystal. Enhancers have internal crystal lattices of perfect cubic symmetry and internal harmony. As “building block” talismans, their internal structure of perfect crystal lattices help us focus our efforts to build on our successes and enhance our lives.
Strengtheners are crystals that are chemically formed in the island silicate class. This class of minerals forms very compact materials that are strong, resistant, and unyielding. Strengthener crystals provide you with the energy to resist temptations and resist distractions from your goals. Garnets are the best known Strengtheners and the perfect talismans to keep us on course.
Green Grossular Garnet has Wood energy, the energy of growth, expansion, new beginnings, nourishment and health. It enhances vitality, brings abundance, and keeps us growing physically. Use green crystals to enhance any space used for eating, in the room of a small child, or in a place of your home where you are beginning a new project. Grossular Garnet of red, scarlet and orange produces Fire energy, the energy of enthusiasm, warmth, brightness, illumination and activity. It is Yang in nature. It is the energy of heat, action, emotion and passion – of ideas, of concepts, and sex. Fire energy is traditionally associated with the south area of a home or room, and like the fiery gemstones, should be used in moderation. It is associated with the fame and reputation area of your life and dwelling. Use its energy for a boost to enhance your standing in the community and within your family
Grossular Garnets in Ancient Lore and Legend
Garnets were employed as inlaid stones in Celtic and Anglo-Saxon jewelry. [Fernie, 19] Garnets the color of fire were also called Carbuncles (from fire-coals), and the Hebrew name for the carbuncle was Bareketh (flashing stone) or Barak (lightning). It was a stone in the breastplate of the High Priest. Eastern legends assert that a carbuncle was suspended by Noah, in the Ark, to diffuse light. The Greeks called the carbuncle the Lamp Stone and it was said, if hung around the neck, to give the power of seeing in the dark. [Fernie, 158-159] [Mella, 86]
Greek mythology speaks of Garnet as a stone that can, through divine influence, heal emotional rifts between lovers. [Simmons, XXI]
A Warrior’s Stone, Garnet served as a talisman in the Crusades for both the Christians and their Muslim enemies. The Merovingians brought garnets from faraway Ceylon (Sri Lanka) through the Silk Road, combining it with amber from the Baltic to create magnificent jewels. Since these two stones balanced each other, one warm, one cold, some see the source of the Frankish civilization in this combination, the amber tempering the warrior-like fieriness of the Germanic people. [Megemont, 87]
Low libido and sexual disorders were credited to be relieved by the application of Garnet directly to the genital organs. Princess Palatine discovered her husband, the brother of King Louis XIV, applying garnets on his body in this way. Though he asked her not to reveal this to anyone, she instead told the whole court and wrote about it in her many famous letters. [Megemont, 87]
Garnet is a conqueror’s stone. Legend has it that a garnet ornamented Don Juan’s ring. [Megemont, 88]
The well-formed image of a lion, if engraved on a garnet, will cure the wearer of all diseases, protect and preserve his honor and health, and guard him from all perils in traveling. [Kunz, 133]
Some Asiatic tribes used red garnets as bullets for sling bows because they pierced their victims quickly and were well hidden when they mingled with the blood. At other times they were placed in wounds to encourage clotting of the blood. [Mella, 85] The tribes continued to use them later as bullets in firearms, assuming the blood-colored stone would inflict a more deadly wound than a leaden bullet. Such were used by the rebellious Hanzas, in 1892, during their hostilities with the British troops on the Kashmir frontier, and many of these precious missiles were preserved as curiosities.
