Introduction to the Meaning and Uses of Andradite Garnet
Andradite Garnet is a calcium iron silicate, named after the Portuguese mineralogist d’Andrada. It is well-grounded in Earth’s elemental colors of green or olive, dark yellow, and black. A spiritual stone of higher thinking and self-empowerment, it is also a stone of strength and safety. Like a forest shields an ebony pool from the summer sun, Andradite offers protection and confidence.
Andradite Garnet is dynamic and flexible, stimulating creativity and attracting into your relationships what you most need for your personal development. Most notably, this mineral works to stabilize and enhance the male qualities of strength, stamina and courage. [Melody, 118][Hall, 137]
All Andradite Garnets possess the metaphysical energies common to all garnets: protection, strength, communication and relationship building. The yellow and darker forms counterbalance sentimentality and emotional clinginess, encouraging equal growth in a relationship. It is helpful to anyone who works alone, and encourages networking and the pooling of ideas. [Eason, 94] The green form of Andradite combines the earth power of Strengtheners with the color rays of growth, awakening, and perseverance, giving us excellent talismans for growing strength and power in both our physical and spiritual lives.
The Types of Andradite Garnet include:
Demantoids are various shades of green and dark olive Andradite; the deep emerald green being the most precious and rare. Russian Demantoid has golden-brown crystal thread inclusions of chrysotile, called horsetail. [Eason, 271] Within the Demantoid garnet is a twist of green fire, a “coal” fire, which generates energy at an atomically high-powered rate of oscillation. [Melody, 118] It removes obstacles in the way of love, and is good to wear if your insecurities or those of a partner put a strain on relationships. It reduces loneliness and isolation, especially for only children or those away from parents in care. [Eason, 271]
Melanite is glossy, black Andradite; relatively rare. Melanite is a powerful grounding stone, connecting one’s Life Force with the fiery core of the Earth, and accessing an almost infinite supply of energy for creative work. [Ahsian, 171] It is a crystal of sincerity and self-discovery, making one more receptive to conscience and strengthening resistance in disputes. [Gienger, 43] It dispels anger, envy, jealousy and mistrust. [Hall, 138] Melanite is often called the male-focus garnet, good for men whose feelings are locked, due perhaps to stern fathering or a strict single-sex school, and who find it hard to express love or enjoy spontaneous pleasure. [Eason, 197]
Topazolite is yellow Andradite; rare to more common. Topazolite is the most powerful and active of the Andradite Garnets, operating through the Solar Plexus and adding focus and determination. [Eason, 94]

Andradite Emotional Healing Energy
Andradite Garnet brings emotional strength, stability and balance, promoting self-confidence and self-esteem in those who rely too much on the approval and permission of others. [Eason, 94]
It dissolves feelings of isolation or alienation and attracts intimate encounters with others. [Hall, 137]
It can help overcome feelings of victimization, and an important stone for those recovering from addictions or who need protection from suicidal thoughts. [Ahsian, 171]
Andradite Garnet boosts creative skills and opens the mind to clearer thinking. [Eason, 94] It is an excellent conductor and can be used to assist in the alignment of the magnetic fields of the body, cleansing and expanding the aura, opening psychic vision. [Hall, 137][Melody, 118]
Green Andradite is associated with the Heart Chakra, located near the center of the breastbone. It regulates our interaction with the external world and controls what we embrace and what we resist. It gives us the balancing ability to be ourselves within the environment. When the heart chakra is out of balance you may feel either controlling or controlled in a relationship, and become critical of the little foibles of others.
You may well find yourself having inappropriately strong emotional responses to everyday external stimuli. Green crystal energy is used to resolve blockages and to re-balance the heart chakra, helping us understand our own needs and emotions clearly. We can deal with the ebbs and flows of emotional relationships, understand their cyclic nature, and accept the changes.
Yellow Andradite activates the Solar Plexus Chakra, the energy distribution center and the chakra of relationships. This chakra is located between the rib cage and navel, and controls the immune and digestive systems. When in balance physically, you have strength to fight infections, are free of allergic reactions, and are able to use the nutrients you ingest.
When the solar plexus is out of balance spiritually, you feel fear – of the disappointment or displeasure of others or to subordinating your life and pleasures to the will of others. Spiritually, when the solar plexus is in balance you are free to interpret the world through your own thoughts and emotions and not live in fear of violating the dictums of others.
Black Andradite attunes to the Base or Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine, and controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and movement. It is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the body. When physically out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as lethargy, low levels of activity, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation.
When its spiritual energies are out of balance, you will feel flighty, disconnected from reality, and distant. Black Andradite clears and activates the Base Chakra and the Sacral Chakra, unleashing the Kundalini energy within the body. It taps into the Life Force and allows you to find your own secret wellsprings of power. It arouses your creativity, will, and focus, and establishes the dynamic grounding needed to actualize your dreams and higher purpose. [Simmons, 171]
Andradite Spiritual Energy
Andradite’s grounding energy assists in willpower, establishing higher intuition, and aids in safety and trust issues. [Gienger, 41] It is protective against fears of the darker side of life, and attempts at mind control, particularly through emotional pressures and misuse of sexual power. [Eason, 94]
Black Andradite is a powerful energy purifier, cleansing any environment that needs constant infusions of Light. It is a great stone for children’s rooms to prevent nightmares, or any instance where unpleasant thoughts causing depression, disturbance or upset persists. It is an excellent ally in the sick room or hospital to prevent negative vibrations or entities from attaching to already weakened energy systems, and to protect shamans or clairvoyants from residual unhappiness from clients during journeying and retrieval of power. [Ahsian, 171][Eason, 197]

All Garnets honor Sekhmet, the Egyptian Goddess of War. She is the most powerful goddess of Lower Egypt, and is usually depicted with the head of a lion and the body of a beautiful woman.
Green Garnet honors Persephone, Greek Goddess of Spring. She represents celebration and the Earth alive with new growth.
There are several ways to find an appropriate birthstone. The traditional one is listed first. These are from the popular lists that most people are familiar with. The second way is to find your natural birthstone by the color wheel of life. You can click on the Natural Birthstone graphic below to learn more. Finally many people use the traditional stones of the Zodiac.
In this section you will find information on all three approaches.
Garnet is the traditional birthstone of those born in January.
Andradite Garnet which is green in color is the natural birthstone of those fortunate enough to be born in the heart of spring (April 20-May 20). Green crystals bring you renewal, success in new ventures, and good health.
Andradite which is dark yellow in color is the natural birthstone of those born in the beginning of summer (June 21-July 21). Yellow crystals bring you enlightenment, optimism, warmth, and clarity.
Garnet is the zodiac stone for those born under the sign Aquarius, the mid-winter season between January 20 and February 18. Aquarians desire the truth of all things and have a gift for art and music. Wikipedia tells us Aquarius is considered a “masculine”, positive (extrovert) sign.
It is also considered an air sign and is one of four fixed signs. Aquarius has been traditionally ruled by the planet Saturn, and, since its discovery, Uranus has been considered a modern ruler of this sign. Being the eleventh sign of the zodiac, Aquarius is associated with the astrological 11th house.
Andradite Amulets and Talismans
A Warrior’s Stone, Garnet served as a talisman in the Crusades for both the Christians and their Muslim enemies. [Megemont, 87]
As an amulet, Garnet was worn on the body for strong protection against poisons. [Mella, 85]
As a member of the Garnet family, Andradite is an Enhancer Strengthener crystal. Enhancers have internal crystal lattices of perfect cubic symmetry and internal harmony. As “building block” talismans, their internal structure of perfect crystal lattices help us focus our efforts to build on our successes and enhance our lives.
Strengtheners are crystals that are chemically formed in the island silicate class. This class of minerals forms very compact materials that are strong, resistant, and unyielding. Strengthener crystals provide you with the energy to resist temptations and resist distractions from your goals. Garnets are the best known Strengtheners and the perfect talismans to keep us on course.
Green Andradite has Wood energy, the energy of growth, expansion, new beginnings, nourishment and health. It enhances vitality, brings abundance, and keeps us growing physically. Use green crystals to enhance any space used for eating, in the room of a small child, or in a place of your home where you are beginning a new project. Wood energy is traditionally associated with the East and Southeast areas of a home or room. It is associated with the Family and Health area, and the Prosperity and Abundance area.
Black Andradite has Water energy, the energy of stillness, quiet strength, and purification. It embodies potentialities unrealized. It is yielding, formless, yet powerful. The water element brings power of regeneration and rebirth. It is the energy of the circle of life. Use black crystals to enhance any space that you use for repose, calm reflection, or prayer. Water energy is traditionally associated with the North area of a home or room. It is associated with the Career and Life Path area, its flowing energy assuring a balance of energy as your life unfolds and flows.
Andradite and Other Garnets in Ancient Lore and Legend
Garnets were employed as inlaid stones in Celtic and Anglo-Saxon jewelry. [Fernie, 19] Garnets the color of fire were also called Carbuncles (from fire-coals), and the Hebrew name for the carbuncle was Bareketh (flashing stone) or Barak (lightning). It was a stone in the breastplate of the High Priest. Eastern legends assert that a carbuncle was suspended by Noah, in the Ark, to diffuse light. The Greeks called the carbuncle the Lamp Stone and it was said, if hung around the neck, to give the power of seeing in the dark. [Fernie, 158-159] [Mella, 86]
Greek mythology speaks of Garnet as a stone that can, through divine influence, heal emotional rifts between lovers. [Simmons, XXI]
A Warrior’s Stone, Garnet served as a talisman in the Crusades for both the Christians and their Muslim enemies. The Merovingians brought garnets from faraway Ceylon (Sri Lanka) through the Silk Road, combining it with amber from the Baltic to create magnificent jewels. Since these two stones balanced each other, one warm, one cold, some see the source of the Frankish civilization in this combination, the amber tempering the warrior-like fieriness of the Germanic people. [Megemont, 87]
Low libido and sexual disorders were credited to be relieved by the application of Garnet directly to the genital organs. Princess Palatine discovered her husband, the brother of King Louis XIV, applying garnets on his body in this way. Though he asked her not to reveal this to anyone, she instead told the whole court and wrote about it in her many famous letters. [Megemont, 87]
Garnet is a conqueror’s stone. Legend has it that a garnet ornamented Don Juan’s ring. [Megemont, 88]
The well-formed image of a lion, if engraved on a garnet, will cure the wearer of all diseases, protect and preserve his honor and health, and guard him from all perils in traveling. [Kunz, 133]
Some Asiatic tribes used red garnets as bullets for sling bows because they pierced their victims quickly and were well hidden when they mingled with the blood. At other times they were placed in wounds to encourage clotting of the blood. [Mella, 85] The tribes continued to use them later as bullets in firearms, assuming the blood-colored stone would inflict a more deadly wound than a leaden bullet. Such were used by the rebellious Hanzas, in 1892, during their hostilities with the British troops on the Kashmir frontier, and many of these precious missiles were preserved as curiosities. [Kunz, 33-34]
