THE DAILY PRACTICE

Perform this at dusk. Dusk is the equinox of every ordinary day, the few minutes when light and dark stand in balance, and this working borrows that balance each evening in small measure. Begin on the equinox itself if you can, or on any evening in the weeks that follow.

Set a white candle and a black candle side by side and light them both. Boil fresh water and pour it over the tea, letting it steep for a few minutes. While it steeps, write two lines on a single page. On the first, name one thing you have gathered, whether today or this year, and do not make it smaller than it is. On the second, name one thing you are ready to let fall with the leaves.

Hold the cup in both hands and let its warmth reach your palms. As you drink, let moonstone ease you through the turning of the season, let black tourmaline stand guard over the nights ahead, let tiger’s eye help you claim the harvest you have earned, and let sunstone keep a small light burning in you through the dark months.

Chant softly: “Light and dark in equal part; balance my days and steady my heart.” When the cup is empty, snuff both candles together, never one before the other.
