How Do I Use Crystals to Protect My Home? One Simple Way

By Hank Mason, G.I.A. Graduate Gemologist

Most people who ask us this are not in danger, and that is worth saying first, because it is usually the worry underneath the question. What they describe is a feeling. The house has not settled. One room is colder than it ought to be. The same argument keeps happening in the same corner of the kitchen. They lie awake listening to a building that has never once made a sound worth listening to.

Sometimes there is a reason they can point at. They have moved into a place where something unhappy happened before they arrived. Somebody difficult has been in the house and the air has not gone back to normal since. There has been a long run of bad luck and it has begun to feel less like coincidence and more like weather.

And sometimes there is no reason at all. The house simply is not theirs yet.

If that is where you are, you are in very ordinary company. Wanting a home to feel safe is among the oldest impulses there is, and people have been treating their doorways for a very long time for exactly this reason.

What This Working Is For

Let me be clear about this before anything else, because the word protection covers two completely different problems and they need completely different answers.

This is a working against ill-wishing. The evil eye. A hex or a curse, if you believe someone has put one on you. Jealousy aimed at your house or your family. The heaviness a difficult person leaves behind them in a room. Whatever settled into the walls before you moved in and never left. That is old, and every tradition on earth has taken it seriously, and there is a great deal of accumulated practice about what to do — which is what the rest of this page is.

It is not for physical danger, and it will not help you there. If somebody is threatening you, if a person has been inside your house who had no business being there, if you are frightened of a specific individual — that needs locks, lights, cameras and the police. Nothing on this page substitutes for any of it, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something at your own expense. Deal with that first. Come back to this afterwards, when the practical part is handled.

If it is the first one — the feeling, the atmosphere, the sense that something is aimed at you or has been left behind — then read on.

What follows is one way to clear that off a house and set a guard against its coming back — not the only way, and we will write about others. But it is complete, it costs very little, and the whole thing takes about twenty minutes. Nothing is burned, nothing is moved, and no part of it depends on having the kind of house that looks good in photographs.

Protection Happens at Openings, Not Corners

The advice you will find most often is to put a crystal in each of the four corners of your home. It makes a tidy diagram. I think it is wrong.

Corners are structure. They are where the walls meet. Nothing comes in through a corner.

Things come in through openings — the door people knock on, the door you actually use, the window that stands open all summer. That is where the boundary of a house genuinely lies, and it is where every threshold tradition has ever put its protection. The salt goes on the doorstep. The bay goes over the door. The iron nail goes in the frame. Not one of them bothers with the corner of the sitting room.

So that is what you treat. Not the whole house. Not the floors. The openings. And in a normal home there are far fewer of those than you think.

Which openings

  • Every exterior door — the front, the back, the side, the one from the garage. Usually two or three.
  • Windows that actually open, at ground level. Not every pane in the house. The ones that get opened, and the ones on the ground floor where somebody could reach.

In most homes that is six or eight things. Upstairs windows that stay shut are not openings in any meaningful sense, and you can leave them.

What You Need

Three things. Two of them go into a spray bottle, and the third goes on your doorframes and stays there.

Black Tourmaline Essence, for the guard. Black tourmaline is the most used protective stone in the world and it earns it. What suits it to a doorway is that it does not soak things up the way many protective stones do — it turns them back and converts them. A deflector rather than a sponge, which is what you want standing at a boundary year after year. The essence lets you put that on an opening where there is no sill to set a stone.

Pluto and Jupiter Aligned Lemongrass, for the clearing. Lemongrass is the heart of Van Van, the old New Orleans formula that has been used to wash floors and doorways for well over a century. It does two things at once, which is why it lasted: Pluto turns out what has settled and gone stale, and Jupiter opens the road behind it so that luck can arrive. Most clearings only subtract. This one subtracts and then leaves the way open.

Ceres Aligned Bay Leaf, for the standing guard. This one is not part of the spray. Bay works whole and dry, and it goes at the threshold. It has guarded houses for a very long time. Hung over a door or kept within, it was held to turn away the evil eye and ill will, and in older Europe to ward off plague, lightning and storms. Ceres is the guardian of the home, and she draws that facet forward: the household and the people in it, shielded. Where basil warms a home and cinnamon makes it comfortable, bay stands at the threshold and keeps harm out — and it goes on doing it long after the spray has dried.

Why the herbs are aligned

An herb is not one fixed thing, and this is the part most people never learn.

Every plant carries energy of many facets at once, and folk herbalism has always used the whole plant, with no way to bring a single facet forward. Alignment is how that is done. Bay aligned to Mars is the trailblazer's herb, for crossing into unknown country. Aligned to Jupiter it is the wish-granting herb. Aligned to Ceres it guards the hearth. Same leaf, three different jobs.

That is why we align our herbs by ritual before they go into the jar, and why the same herb is stocked aligned several different ways. For this you want Ceres aligned bay. Bay from the supermarket will make a very good stew.

Making the Spray

Two ingredients, ten minutes of work, most of it waiting.

Boil about half a litre of water. Take it off the heat, drop in a good handful of the lemongrass, cover it, and leave it alone until it is completely cold. An hour or so. Do not rush it with cold water — you want the full steep.

Strain it well, through a sieve and then a coffee filter if you have one, because loose bits will block the sprayer.

Pour it into your spray bottle and add the black tourmaline essence — a capful, or a good few drops. Shake it.

That is the whole preparation, and it will smell like the best thing you have ever cleaned anything with. The bay stays dry and out of this; it has its own job further down.

Walking the House

Open the windows first, as many as you can. What you raise needs somewhere to go.

Start at the furthest point from your front door. Upstairs at the back if you have an upstairs, the far corner if you do not. Then work forward and down, and never backwards. The direction is not decoration — you are driving everything ahead of you toward the front door and out. Start at the front and you will only chase it deeper into the house.

At each opening, spray lightly and move on. A window: a few pumps across the frame and the sill, glass if you like, and the handle. A door: the sill or the threshold at the bottom, and the frame at each side. You are not cleaning anything and there is nothing to wipe. Spray, speak, move on.

Say the words at each one.

Out with the old harm; the way is washed clean and open.

And as you go, name what leaves — your own words, out loud, not a script. The argument that keeps repeating. The bad year. Whoever was here before you. Saying things aloud in an empty house feels ridiculous for about ninety seconds and then stops feeling ridiculous at all.

Finish at the front door. Spray the sill and both sides of the frame, then open the door and spray once across the threshold, outward, into the air beyond the step. Close the door behind you.

Keep the bottle somewhere cool. It holds about a month before the infusion begins to turn, and a month is exactly the interval you want.

Setting the Bay

Now the guard, and this is the part that stays.

The old instruction is to hang bay above the door, and if you have a deep frame or a hook to hang it from, that still works perfectly well. Most of us do not. Modern doors are flush, most of us rent, and nobody is taping leaves to the top of a doorframe.

So put it where the threshold actually is now. Under the doormat.

Lift the mat at each exterior door, lay four or five whole bay leaves flat underneath it, and put the mat back. That is the entire job. The leaves sit exactly on the line the old charm was meant to guard, nobody can see them, they cannot fall down, and every single person who comes into your house steps over them on the way in.

As you set each one down:

Harm and the evil eye, stay out; this house is guarded.

If a door has no mat — a flat entrance, a shared hallway, a back door onto a step — put the leaves in whatever already lives beside it. The dish where the keys go. A small bowl on the shelf. The pocket of the coat that hangs there. It only needs to be at the door and it only needs to be somewhere you know about.

Two or three doors is all. The spray treats every opening in the house; the bay stands at the ones people actually come through.

The Monthly Round

Once a month, make a fresh bottle and walk the house again. Lift each mat and swap the bay for fresh leaves while you are at it. Twenty minutes, and this is the part that makes the difference.

People assume a protection wears out, that the energy drains and needs topping up. That is not really it, and I would rather give you the true reason.

Anything you set at a doorway stops being noticed. Your eye learns the shape of your own hallway so completely that within about six weeks you genuinely do not see what is in it. And a protection you have stopped noticing has stopped doing the one thing it can reliably do, which is to keep the safety of your home somewhere in your mind rather than nowhere in it.

Going round again breaks that. You have to look at every door and window to treat it — which means once a month you actually look at your own doors and windows.

Here is the kind of thing I mean. Picture somebody — call her Ellen — who did this in February, after moving into a house that felt wrong to her from the first night. It settled. By April she had not thought about it in weeks, and when she finally made a fresh bottle and went round again, she found the deadbolt on the back door had never once been thrown since the day she moved in, because the previous owner had left the key somewhere she had never thought to look. She had been sleeping behind an unlocked door for two months. No spray told her that. Going round again did.

If You Want to Take It Further

Set a piece of black tourmaline at the door you actually come in by — on the floor beside the frame, on a shelf, in the dish where the keys live. The spray treats the opening and the bay stands above it; a stone is the thing that sits there while everyone sleeps. If you buy one thing beyond the three above, buy that.

This Is One Way, Not the Only Way

Everything here is a single complete working, chosen because it is simple, cheap, and possible on a weeknight in a house with carpets and furniture and people in it.

It is not the whole subject. There are other stones for a house and other herbs for a threshold. There is a stronger form for a house that has had a specific person’s ill-will aimed at it, and a gentler one for a house that is simply unsettled. Nettle at the door holds harm out where bay turns the evil eye away, and those are not the same problem. Selenite clears differently from a wash.

We will write about those. Do this one first, live with it for a month, and you will have a much better sense of what your own house actually needs.

A Final Word

What this gives you is not a sealed house. It is a boundary you have drawn yourself, deliberately, opening by opening, and something at your threshold that means safety to you every time you walk over it.

That matters more than it sounds. Ill-wishing works on you largely by sitting in the back of your mind, unaddressed, where you can neither see it nor do anything about it. Naming it out loud at your own front door and putting a guard there is how you stop carrying it around. And walking the boundary once a month is how you keep the safety of your home somewhere in your mind rather than nowhere in it.

People who do this rarely tell us afterwards that the house feels magical. What they say is that it feels like theirs. That is not a small thing, and for most of the people who write to us it was the whole point.
