Lesson 6 - Crystals and Goddesses
Goddess worship has had a revival since the mid to late 1970s as a growing form of spirituality. The popularity has stemmed from the diminished influence of Christianity in many societies.
These religious beliefs use female imagery in celebrating the divine and see the Goddess as primary, all-encompassing, and essential in their spiritual development.
Depending on your particular beliefs, a goddess can be either a divine being or a metaphor for a place, natural phenomenon, or human emotion. But whatever your belief, you will find bringing their unique spirits to your life with crystals can be very rewarding.
In this lesson, we discuss the use of crystals to bring the intercession of the goddesses to your life. You may believe, as many people do, that goddesses are female deities. You may honor one or more of them as part of your spiritual beliefs. We trust that our suggestions for the use of crystals are helpful.
And for the many of you that do not believe in goddesses as divine beings, we offer that the named goddesses are personifications and metaphors for Mother Nature’s attributes and elements that make it easier for us to deal with them.
A metaphor can be very helpful for understanding because it provides a visual description of a concept or thought. “Pele, the Fire God” is easier to visualize than a “cauldron of molten lava on top of a large mound of earth and rock that gives off flames and smoke that might devour our village.” The metaphor captures the spirit of the idea in a way that makes it easier for the human mind to grasp.
In the Universe we find ourselves in, the Earth and sky have many parts, places, and activities. The valleys, rivers, lakes, mountains, deserts, streams, stars, the Moon and Sun, the Milky Way, the Aurora, the animals, trees, etc., all have a spirit to them that mankind seems to have a need to personify. The storms, lightning, floods, waves, sunrise, sunset, and other natural phenomena also have a spirit that we find a need to make somehow more understandable. We often seem to do that by personifying them as some mystical being - a god or goddess.
We also give human-like, god, and goddess forms to emotions. Almost every culture had or still has a goddess of love like Venus or Aphrodite. We have a goddess of
strength too, like Artemus, and goddesses of nurture like Durga or Kali.
Our human brain can deal with these attributes of Nature and with these emotions by visualizing them in the form and actions of a goddess. By naming them and making them somehow like us, we can find ways of at least having the illusion of some influence and control.
We can deal with a volcano if we give it the form of Goddess Pele. We can deal with the wild ocean if it is controlled by Poseidon. We can make amulets to Venus in hopes she will intercede on our behalf in our quests for a mate.
In this manner, it is now easy to see a connection between crystals and the goddesses. We can use crystals in our efforts to influence Nature by appealing to a goddess that personifies that element. We can try to control the weather to ensure enough rain for our crops by seeking the intercession of a harvest goddess such as Demeter, the Corn Mother, Pachamama, or Huichi. We can then use appropriate crystals to aid in our efforts to bring the beneficence of their spirit to our lives.
Let’s look at some things we may well want in our lives and how we can appeal to the spirit of Nature we need to influence by appealing to a goddess that represents the element or emotion we need to control or influence.
Find love
Aphrodite
The Greek Goddess, Aphrodite, can bring you love, passion, and beauty. Those who honor her today understand the joy she can help you find in life and love.
Rose Quartz is associated with Aphrodite. It has the effect of drawing love into one’s life, as Aphrodite can draw love into life. It opens your heart and helps you fall in love and increases your ability to give love to others. Use rose quartz on your altar to Aphrodite. With it, use candles of red and pink.
Have a Good Home
Goddess Hestia
Hestia is a popular Goddess, our Goddess of Home and Hearth. Her favorite color is red because it represents her element, fire.
Her Roman name is Vesta, Goddess of Fire. Both her names mean "the essence.” She never left her home and never went out on adventures to explore the world. Hestia stayed at home and is really the Goddess of Hospitality, who should be welcomed and honored in every home. Being the tender of the sacred fires, she is associated with the warmth of the fireplace. Hestia gives us the security, peace, and comfort of being safely home and warm.
Two stones to represent the influential Hestia are the heart stone and the red Garnet. A heart stone is not a certain stone in particular. It is a stone you find near your home that seems to be “right” for you. You can take that stone you find and put it into your altar, but you may not take it with you when you move. You have to return it where you found it. In a new home, you must find a new heart stone for that place.
Red garnet is the other stone to use to honor Hestia. It is the color of fire and is used for protection and strength. You should have a red garnet in your home near the fireplace to honor the Goddess of the Hearth, Hestia. Vanadinite is also excellent for honoring this Goddess. It is the color of the home and hearth.
Become Wiser in Your Dealings
Cerridwen
Cerridwen is the Welsh triple goddess. She is the Goddess of the cauldron and the moon. Her triad includes Blodeuwedd and Arianrhod. She is the keeper of the sacred cauldron of knowledge, wisdom, and light. Her potions are magical potions of divine wisdom and inspiration.
Cerridwen is the guardian of spiritual transformation. She rules the gifts of prophecy and magic, and she powers death and rebirth. It's said that she is one of the five goddesses of Avalon.
Cerridwen teaches us that we are all really one with each other. She's able to give you wisdom, power, magic, and protection. Her knowledge can teach you about magic and the power of unity.
To honor Cerridwen and ask for her wisdom, use both a sunstone and a moonstone. Carry the stones together for the wisdom and power of the sun, combined with the harmony of her moon spirit.
Control your Anger
Pele
Pele was born of the spirit Haumea in what is now known as Tahiti. She was a wanderer and set out with her little sister Hi'iaka (in the form of an egg) under her arm in a canoe to what is now Hawaii. Pele, the Goddess of Fire, has a temper to match. She is to be respected. Even today, visitors to Hawaii are warned to be careful not to anger her.
The spirit of Pele lives a bit in everyone. To keep your temper in check, recognize the signs that “light your fire” and find a way to calm down. Use lava rock and obsidian to show respect to the Fire Goddess. A few pieces placed near your fireplace will show her you honor her gift of fire and appreciate the benefits it brings.
Obviously, we have only scratched the surface here. Fortunately, we have been exploring this connection for quite a while.
