Lesson 3 - Crystal Meditation (part 1)
Meditation is an ancient practice that offers tremendous benefits to the practitioner. Meditation does not require any specific beliefs or metaphysical or spiritual ideas. You do not need any special talent. You only need yourself, your mind, and a few minutes in which you can be undisturbed.
Why do people meditate?
For relaxation. Meditation will alter your mind state. This is a physical fact. You can actually slow down your brain wave pattern and move from the active beta state to the alpha state. This will relax both your body and your mind.
For creative visualization. In the alpha mode, you can talk with yourself and creatively visualize something you seek. It could be a new relationship, a happier state of mind, improved health, or whatever you desire. You can then see yourself accomplishing your goal. Such affirmations are powerful programmers of the human mind.
Contacting your higher self. Now, this might seem a bit unbelievable, but in meditation, it is just you. With your brain in an alpha state all thoughts, ideas, and inputs are coming from deep within your mind, and you are conscious at the time. This will be sporadic, but meaningful. It does become a bit addictive. Everyone wonders who they really are. We catch glimpses of our deepest thoughts and our dreams.
Allowing outflow. Most people who are truly happy realize that they have what they need within them, that it is essentially boundless, and that they derive satisfaction from sharing it. Meditation allows for focusing on what is within.
Self-Healing. We all know many afflictions are self-induced. We can think ourselves sick, and we can often think ourselves well. Meditation is a direct link to your inner self. Affirmations of wellness during meditation are effective mind control and body control tools for health.
Opening Energy Centers. Meditation will aid you in finding the sources of energy you have within you.
Grounding. Meditation will connect you with the planet, and assure you are seeing things as they truly exist.
Connecting with Angels and Spirit Guides. Prayer is often a form of meditation. The meditative state makes your mind more open to communication with spirits.
How do I use Crystals in Meditation?
Meditation with crystals is a two-step process. First, you must find the crystal that has the Universal Life Force energy that is appropriate to your intentions. Then you must use a meditation ritual with that crystal. Both steps are easy enough for anyone to learn.
In Lesson 1, we learned the five steps to choosing a crystal. In Lesson 2 we learned how to cleanse it for use. So, the first parts of using crystals for meditation we already know.
But let's review a bit and focus the selection on a crystal for meditation. Then we will go on to establish our meditation ritual.
We learned in Lesson 1 that we start by having a very clear intention. For this first crystal meditation example, let’s assume we want to meditate to deal with stress in our lives and become more calm and centered.
We start with the Crystal Vaults' Crystal Reference Guide at CrystalVaults.com. Among the hundred or more guides we find there are guides to "Crystals for Stress", "Crystals for Calm", and "Crystals for Centering".
We do a quick review of each of these and we feel the information in "Crystals for Centering" fits our needs best. We read there:
When life becomes stressful, we often feel like we are out of balance, out of control, or simply slipping away from ourselves. It can be brought on by long-term stress such as with a difficult job or short-term stress such as giving a speech in front of your peers. In both instances centering one’s self is a useful and viable technique in bringing calm back into the storm raging inside. Centering can help bring you back to the present and ward off the negativity surrounding you. It pulls our inner strength out and calms our nerves, bringing us peace and solidarity. Finding your center takes work to achieve but it is one of the most rewarding practices you can do for yourself.
That sounds like what we are after. The guide tells us that brown crystals bring you earth energy, the energy of relaxation and nature. The central color of the earth helps bring you focus and eases the process of centering yourself.
Modern life seems to disconnect us from the earth; we get caught up in the hustle and bustle. We forget to be human, and we ignore our true nature. Brown can be used when it is necessary to get down from an excited state, or from being "up in the air", undecided, or flighty. It grounds us like the color of the earth it represents. When you need to settle down, regroup, and revitalize, use a brown crystal.
The guide tells us that Smoky Quartz is a powerful grounding stone that is used extensively in healing and meditation work. It is one of the fundamental grounding stones. It is known to be able to establish a clear path to removing negativity by passing it back into the Earth where it can dissipate naturally.
It is also used in praying to ancestors, grounding the spirit, and providing an anchor in the natural world. The natural colors of the earth help ground you and center your being, shaking off the negative energy as you find peace and balance.
That was easy. We can use a Smoky Quartz crystal for our meditation.
Now it is off to the Crystal Inner Circle to see if we can find an article or post about using Smoky Quartz in Meditation. There are over 5,000 articles on how to use crystals there, so we should find one.
A quick search for "smoky quartz" finds exactly what we want… FIND POWERFUL GROUNDING ENERGIES WITH SMOKY QUARTZ IN MEDITATION.
The article explains
Smoky Quartz is an ideal crystal for grounding the spirit in meditation, relieving barriers between the alpha and beta states of mind in order to set aside the thinking mind and stop the mental chatter that consumes one’s consciousness. It allows one to simply be in the moment, clear all thoughts, and attune to higher awareness.
It continues,
Smoky Quartz refines one’s vibratory energies allows for a deep, prolonged meditative state, and may be used to initiate a powerful force field that can absorb many forms of negativity, both from within oneself and from outer sources.
The Crystal Inner Circle post even has a reference video. It is actually pretty good!
Using the Crystal Reference Guide and the Crystal Inner Circle, we are very quickly finding we can use crystals for meditation and know we have the right one and some ideas of how to use it.
Let’s do a second example. You might want to meditate to gain some clarity or understanding of what you really want in a particular part of your life. You may be looking to find clarity on a particular situation or question; to try and clear the fog and find the correct path. We need clarity to be able to see what is in front of us and find the best way to tackle and conquer it.
Let’s go to the Crystal Vaults' Crystal Reference Guide and see what we find there first.
There is an article "Crystals for Clarity". It is a good beginning. We find there that yellow crystals are recommended, Citrine in particular. We see that some authors also recommend Rhodonite and others Blue Lace Agate.
We are curious and we want to pursue this more, so we go to the Crystal Inner Circle and search for "clarity". We are looking for ideas of stones to use in a clarity meditation. Let’s see what we can quickly find.
There are many articles that are helpful. Here is one that is exactly what we are seeking. It not only tells us which crystals can be used but provides a detailed ritual to use them. We will explore establishing a personal meditation ritual in the next part of this lesson, but let's see what this article offers us.
Meditation Ritual for Focus and Mental Clarity
You will need a few things for this ritual, and they include:
-
Crystals of fluorite, citrine, or clear quartz improve mental focus and enhancement of the third eye chakra.
-
Yellow candles, to increase focus and intuition.
-
Incense of cardamom, for mental clarity, concentration, and motivation.
-
Angel statue or image of Archangel Uriel.
Use Fluorite to clear the mental fog, confusion, or conflicting ideas, or to quiet worried thoughts and anxiety. Citrine opens the higher mind to accept joy in one’s life, releasing anger and negative feelings, deep-seated fears, and destructive tendencies. Clear Quartz acts as a deep soul cleanser, purifying and enhancing the body’s internal structure and surrounding subtle bodies to connect the physical dimension with the mind.
Archangel Uriel can help guide intellectual pursuits. He illuminates our thoughts with pure intentions and creative and artistic innovations. His aura will help us focus and remain focused on what is important to the success of our future.
That is a good summary of what crystals we might use in our meditation. Now the article continues with a method we might use.
Arrange the items in a circle, and light the candles. Use the flame from the candles to light your incense, and let the aroma waft around your space. Allow relaxation and increased spiritual consciousness into your being, Focus on the angel statue, and invoke Uriel into your life. Hold your crystals close to your third eye chakra, for cleansing and spiritual alignment. You will find focusing more successful and easier if you do this meditation weekly or otherwise regularly.
Using the Crystal Reference Guide and the many posts and articles of the Crystal Inner Circle has allowed us to quickly learn what crystals we might need for a particular meditation.
Review
This ends part one of lesson three, Crystal Meditation. In this lesson, we reviewed how to select a particular crystal for meditation. We learned that using lessons one and two, we are able to begin to process of finding our perfect meditation companion.
We also went over the two best tools you can use in your endeavors to find particular crystals for your meditation needs. This includes the resources at Crystal Vaults, including our Crystal Reference Guide, which tells you what crystals to use. While the second tool, the Crystal Inner Circle, can tell you how to use them
Lesson 3 - Crystal Mediation (part 2)
Establishing your Meditation Ritual
The word ritual may well conjure up religious activities such as Sunday church services, baptism, and funerals. These are specific rituals and they all serve very important purposes in human life.
Rituals are inherent in the spiritual belief system of every culture from Gregorian chants, to reciting the Rosary, to the Sufi dervishes, to the celebratory dances of certain native tribes. They all serve the same purpose: to elevate one's physical and emotional consciousness.
But there is another meaning of ritual, the meaning of performance. In a performance, you are "acting". You are disassociated with the real actual world and "putting on a show". You are doing two things at once. You are performing the ritual, and at the same time, you are watching it from your perspective.
For a moment consider that you are an actor playing a part in a play. Your body is doing the movements and saying the lines of the part you are acting. At the same time, your mind is dealing with that and it is in the real world thinking about your next lines, and the next mark you need to hit. You are actually watching yourself.
This ability to separate the mind and body to a degree is an important step in a successful meditation.
Your meditation effort is aimed at establishing a connection with parts of your mind that are normally not accessible. If you can establish a ritual that frees up part of your mind from maintaining a full connection to the actual world and your body, then you will have more freedom and connections to use in your meditation.
Ritual provides that ability by essentially being a performance that precedes and flows seamlessly into your actual meditation activity. In this way, you can disassociate a part of your consciousness and leave it open and free.
Rituals are important to meditation because the repetition of enacting each ritual component provides a focal point from distraction; a level of comfort and familiarity; an opportunity to demonstrate reverence for being in the moment and a way to allow part of your mind to become open to your subconscious.
I cannot tell you what ritual to perform. Just as each of us is a very different person, so too, each of us needs to have a meditation ritual of our own, not someone else’s.
But here are some suggestions you might start with and some that should be of help.
First, cleanse your meditation crystal. Secondly, find a quiet place, Third, make yourself comfortable. You don't have to sit in the lotus position to meditate. Rather, sit comfortably. You can sit on a pillow, in a chair, on a bench, or anywhere you are comfortable.
Then relax. Take a few deep breaths. Now starting with your toes, focus on each part of your body in turn willing it to completely relax. Take your time. Do just this. Focus on each part until you get to your mind.
Then very slowly count from ten to one.
Now see a cord tied to the center of the earth extending all the way through the earth to your backbone, up your backbone, and connected to your mind. Think about getting up. You should not be able to. You are now grounded and prepared for a meditative state.
Next, focus on the meditation crystal for a few minutes without moving. You might hold it in your hand and focus on how it feels. You might place it on a table or stand with a candle behind it, and watch the flame as it dances in the crystal.
You might close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the crystal’s spirit. You might, in your mind’s eye slowly become very small and travel into the crystal.
Now begin to feel the energy of the cosmos flowing in your crystal. Be sure you can actually feel and see this energy. It will take some concentration, but that will now be easy. See the energy flow into your body. Now with the energy flowing, focus your mind on your purpose.
If your purpose is to relieve some pain, see the energy flow to the location of the pain. If you are trying to open energy centers, see the energy flow into the right chakra. If you are trying to simply relax, see the energy start to engulf you in a protective cocoon.
If you are seeking understanding, see the energy flow into the deep recesses of your mind. If you are seeking to communicate with spirit beings, see the energy flow out of the top of your head and disperse into the heavens.
To end a session, you do not need to really plan anything,
When it is time to return to the everyday world, you will know it. You may want to have a post-meditation ritual. Here are some ideas to consider.
Slow down the energy flow. See the crystal dim. Set it down. Now start from the top of your head and mentally shake each part of your body. When you get to your toes, wiggle them and then imagine the rope connecting you to the center of the earth has disappeared.
Now get up. Put your hands up over your head as high as you can, stand on tiptoes if you can, and stretch your body. Put the crystal away.
Your meditation ritual is one that gets you into the meditative state and brings you back to the world when it is time to do so. The right crystal for your intentions used in a ritual that suits your spirit can be an immeasurable help to a successful meditation practice.
These are really just suggested steps in a ritual process you might use. Feel free to adapt these ideas to your personal preferences. You will not do things the same each time, but each time you follow the ritual steps you will find they become more natural and more readily predispose you to successful meditation.
Review
This ends part two of lesson three, Crystal Meditation. In this lesson, we discussed what exactly a meditation ritual is, why it is important, and the benefits it can offer.
We also offer some examples that you could use for your own meditation ritual. However, we definitely advocate using bits and pieces of what you like and making it your own.
