Calendula — the pot marigold — is the flower of the sun and the flower of the dead, and sees no contradiction in being both. By day it is pure sunlight made petal, a round gold bloom that opens with the sunrise and follows it across the sky; by night its orange petals light the road of the Día de los Muertos, leading the beloved dead home.
