“Why should a man die,” the old proverb asks, “who has sage in his garden?” For most of recorded history sage was the herb you grew above all others — Salvia, from the Latin salvere, to be well, to be saved, the very name a promise of rescue: salvia salvatrix, sage the savior. So prized was it that Chinese merchants, who had their own fine teas, would once trade three crates of them for a single crate of European sage. This is Salvia officinalis — the garden sage of the cook and the healer, a handsome, sober plant of gray-green leaves throwing up spikes of blue-violet flowers, giving off a clean, savoury, resinous scent when brushed. (Its white-leaved desert cousin, Salvia apiana, is the sacred sage of the smudge-stick; the two are kin and both cleanse, but they are worth keeping distinct — this is the garden sage.) It is no accident that the same word names a wise old person: sage is the herb of wisdom quite as much as of health, the gray-green plant of the elder. Its tarot card is the Hierophant, keeper of tradition; its governing oracle is Dealing with Tradition — honor the wisdom handed down. It belongs to the Mansion of the Herbalist, watched over by Panacea the goddess of healing, and answers to the third eye, the seat of clear seeing, under the slow governance of Jupiter.
