There is a plant that waits all year for one day. St John’s Wort comes into its full golden bloom at the summer solstice — Midsummer, the longest day, the sun at the very peak of its power — and takes that day for its name and its whole character. Bruise one of its little yellow flowers and it bleeds a deep blood-red oil, as if it had caught and held a drop of the summer sun inside itself. That is exactly what the old herbalists believed it had done: gathered the light of the strongest day and kept it, so that a scrap of high summer could be carried into the dark half of the year. Its oldest and most feared name is Fuga daemonum — the flight of demons, the devil-chaser: hung over the door, burned on the Midsummer fire, worn against the skin, it was the great banisher of evil, of nightmares, and of the melancholy that settles like a fog and won’t lift.
