The “Lone Butterfly” spread encourages us to embrace our individuality and take steps towards transformation and transition in order to better ourselves. This spread is structured like a Past-Present-Future spread but in the form of the transitions of the butterfly’s metamorphosis. Hello, I am Nicole the resident Tarot Master here in the Star Grotto.
Cultural myth and lore honor the butterfly as a symbol of transformation because of its impressive process of metamorphosis. From egg to larvae (caterpillar), to pupa (the chrysalis or cocoon), and from the cocoon the butterfly emerges in all of her magnificent glory.
The butterfly embraces her environment, adapting quickly to her own personal changes as well as those around her. She asks us to accept the change in our lives as she does. She urges us to keep our faith as we undergo transitions in our lives. She understands that our toiling, fretting, and anger are useless against the turning tides of nature – she asks us to recognize the same.
- First Card: THE CATERPILLAR – The Caterpillar represents the past. These are the energies and events that are in the past yet still affect you. The card selected here will tell you how your past either holds you back (blocks) or helps you move forward (growth.) It will also tell you what you need to take from the past and use it to your advantage today.
- Second Card: THE CHRYSALIS – The Chrysalis represents the present. This is what is going on for you right now. In the Chrysalis, lies the energy of the present moment. This card illustrates the opportunities and challenges that are currently being presented to you
- Third Card: THE BUTTERFLY – The butterfly is the final step in its metamorphosis. This card represents the outcome of the situation and the direction that things seem to be moving towards. It also represents what you wish to happen from the situation.
