Introduction to the Meaning and Uses of Selenite
Behold a brilliant, luminous moon through a shimmery Selenite crystal and gaze upon the beautiful Moon Goddess Selene herself, with her silver wings and crescent crown, traveling the sky in a gleaming chariot to turn golden day into silvery night and to guide and protect those in darkness. While ancient cultures named several goddesses to symbolize the moon, the Greeks believed Selene to be the Moon itself. She, like her crystal, embodies tranquility, blessing, love and light.
Selenite is celebrated for the transparency and ethereal radiance its crystals provide. Like the moon, it reflects a pure beam of white light into any environment in which it rests, and is believed to contain the liquid Light of Spirit inhabiting the place between light and matter. Selenite inspires a profound peace, and carries a fine, high frequency and intensity of energy that surpasses nearly all stones for opening, clearing, and activating the Crown and Higher Crown Chakras. It is ideal for meditation, spiritual work, connecting to ancient wisdom and knowledge, and is one of the best crystals for accessing one’s spirit guides and the angelic realm. [Raphaell, 151][Margherita, 534][Hall, 259][Simmons, Ahsian, 350-351][Hall En, 257][101 Hall, 182]
While Selenite is an ancient crystal, it is one of the most powerful for the new vibration on earth, attuned to the greater good of all beings. It is a beautiful means for accessing and grounding the Light Body of an individual, and for opening one to the higher levels of Self. It is highly effective for advancement of the mind and mental powers, particularly for developing telepathic communications between like-minded people. Selenite is thought to possesses the ability to hold information within its structure and is best used in telepathy by one person beaming a thought or message into the crystal, which can then be attuned to and retrieved by a second individual. It may also be used to scry the truth of a situation that has happened in its presence, and is reputed to hold earth’s own recorded history within its linear markings. [Raphaell, 151-152][Hall, 259][Hall En, 257][Ahsian, 351]
In the ancient world, certain clear crystals, especially those with a glassy or pearly luster, were held in esteem, believed to wax and wane with the moon and its cycles. Because of its white, moon-like effect from cleavage surfaces or the quality of light transmitted through it, this crystal was named selēnitēs (literally “moon stone”), from the Greek word selēnē (Moon). It is a form of Gypsum, a hydrous calcium sulfate, that develops in transparent, well-formed crystals or in crystalline masses. It has a hardness of 2, meaning it can be easily scratched with a fingernail, and with natural thermal insulating properties, will feel warm to the touch. [www.mindat.org][www.gemdat.org][en.wikipedia.org][Simmons, 350][Lembo, 315]
Selenite forms in the monoclinic system and is typically tabular in nature with striations running the length of the crystal. It is usually transparent and colorless with a vitreous or pearly luster, but can form with no imperfections and appear clear as glass. Selenite may also form as reticular or columnar crystals, exhibit twinning, and display interesting inclusions such as interior or exterior druse, dendrites, fossils, and in rare instances, enhydro cells of water or gas bubbles encased when the crystal was formed. Though quite fragile, some Selenite crystals are soft enough to be bent slightly in one’s hand and often grow bent in nature. Selenite sometimes forms in thin mica-like sheets and has been used in rare occasions as window panes, as in the 5th century church Santa Sabina in Rome. Selenite crystals range in size from miniscule to the largest fully formed crystals in the world, some measuring over 36 feet in length and weighing nearly 55 tons. (See “Cave of the Crystals,” the Naica Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico.) [www.mindat.org][www.gemdat.org][en.wikipedia.org][Simmons, 350][Lembo, 315][geologyin.com]
Selenite is closely related to the other crystalline forms of Gypsum: Satin Spar, a compact fibrous variety that is generally translucent with a pearly chatoyant appearance; Desert Rose, most often bladed in the familiar shape of a rose with an outer druse of sand, or with sand throughout; and Gypsum Flower, an opaque variety usually attached to a matrix with spreading fibers forming a myriad of shapes, sometimes with severe curves and bends. While all have, at times, been grouped together and collectively called Selenite, the variety producing transparent, well-formed crystals remains the true Selenite. [www.mindat.org][www.gemdat.org][en.wikipedia.org]
In addition to the clear colorless or pearly white crystals of Selenite, in nature, druse, inclusions, or the presence of other minerals may cause Selenite crystals to form in light tints of color or exhibit a translucency or opacity. In addition to the general properties of Selenite, those displaying the following hues carry some additional qualities:
Blue Selenite - carries the full intuitive power of a moon crystal but combines it with intellectual knowledge and powers of assessment. It is great for seeing through illusion, and is an excellent business crystal for balancing integrity and people skills with financial acumen. Placed on the Third Eye, Blue Selenite quiets the intellect and helps to shut off mind chatter during meditation. It is a particularly lucky talisman during a month with two full moons (called a Blue Moon), and is ideal for beginning or improving a therapy or New Age business. [Eason, 241][Hall, 260][Hall En, 164]
Green Selenite - assists one in working for the highest good, and promotes self-esteem and a general sense of well-being. It may be used to help delay the effects of aging on the skin and skeleton. [Hall, 260][Hall En, 126][101 Hall, 182]
Orange or Orange-brown Selenite - encourages a friendly, productive atmosphere and is marvelous for use in the home or workplace. It is a great crystal for grounding angelic energies or to aid Earth healing. Use it to send healing to places damaged by deforestation, mining, and emissions released into the environment, or for gridding houses suffering from geopathic or electromagnetic stress. This color is ideal as a focus for connecting with moon and Earth divas or higher nature essences. [Eason, 83][Hall En, 67]
Peach Selenite - a stone of emotional transformation, is ideal for drawing out issues of abandonment, rejection, alienation or betrayal. It is a karmic cleanser offering healing, forgiveness and acceptance, no matter in what timeframe these issues have occurred. Connected to Persephone, Greek Queen of the Underworld, Peach Selenite shines light into dark places helping one understand one’s inner processes and to accept the hidden self. It is particularly inspiring for women celebrating rites of passage, such as puberty, childbirth or menopause, to reconnect to the wise feminine divine power. [Hall II, 206-207][Hall En, 39][101 Hall, 182]
The formation known as Fishtail Selenite or Angel Wings Selenite provides deep healing for the nerves and neural pathways, soothing and stabilizing emotions, and defusing tension. It ushers in positivity and light to guide one through uncertainties, and is highly beneficial for facilitating contact with one’s angels. [Hall, 261][energymuse.com]
Note: Selenite is water soluble. Immersing it will erode the surface. Dust gently, or wipe with a slightly dampened cloth to clean or re-polish. Never soak Selenite, and always use the indirect method when preparing an elixir.
Selenite Uses and Purposes
Selenite is a wonderful talisman for women, bringing radiance and harmony, and support through all cycles of life. Wear in jewelry to attract love, fertility, and to maintain fidelity; also to induce calm throughout pregnancy and motherhood. Keep a Selenite angel where moonlight shines on her to spread warm, loving energies. Selenite may also enhance chances of reconciliation. Send a small piece to someone with whom you wish to reconnect. [Eason, 157]
Selenite is ideal for gridding a space, creating a safe, uplifting environment protected from outside influences. Place indoors in the corners of a house or room, or in the workplace. Also utilize Selenite eggs or clusters to protect from outside negativity, especially at night. Give a sphere to children who fear the dark and explain how moon rays are captured within and shine on them as they sleep. [Eason, 157][Hall, 259]
Selenite is known for its magnificent natural wands, delicate and slender, often quite long yet relatively inexpensive. They are prized by crystal healers for purification and all types of energetic cleansing because of their pure vibration. Use to detach entities and thought forms from the aura and to prevent anything external from influencing the mind. Form highly effective energy tools by combining Selenite wands with almost any stone or combination of stones to synergistically blend and amplify their powers by many times. Selenite wands are also excellent for building energy grids to use in the home or outdoors, that can be disassembled and reassembled as needed. Lying in the center of one of these configurations can generate experiences of spiritual ascension. [Simmons, 351][Hall, 259][Hall En, 257]
Utilize Selenite to decrease shyness and reserve in one’s professional life, and to aid in materialistic pursuits related to business and making a profit. It fosters harmonious partnerships, and brings insight and good judgment during disagreements or negotiations. [Melody, 595][Eason, 157]

Selenite Physical Healing
Selenite is best used to clear blockages and densities in the energy field, and to direct high-frequency energy into the body to stimulate physical healing. It is often used to align the spinal column. (With a Selenite crystal or wand, trace the spinal column from the base of the spine to the back of the neck to remove blockages, or travel in the opposite direction to smooth the flow of energy.) Selenite also strengthens the core physical structure by promoting flexibility within the muscular system, as well as supporting the bones, nerves, and tendons. [Melody, 595][Ahsian, 352][Lembo, 315][Hall, 259]
Selenite may be used to assist in treatments to correct disorders or deformities of the skeletal system, and for stabilizing epileptic disorders. It is thought to ameliorate illnesses caused by mercury poisoning from dental amalgam, and to prevent and reverse the effects of “free radicals.” Selenite may be used as an emotional stabilizer to calms mood swings and aid attention deficit disorder, and can be utilized as a boost for youthfulness and vitality, and to help extend one’s life span. [Melody, 595][Hall, 259-260][Eason, 157]
Selenite Emotional Healing Energy
Selenite may be used to calm and stabilize erratic emotions, and to clear away confusion, feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, doubt or other forms of negativity. It allows one to see the inner workings of a situation and to grasp what is superficial and what is going on at a deeper level. Selenite helps bring flexibility to one’s nature and strength to one’s decisions. It can also be used to stimulate the emotional body in overcoming stagnation, compelling one to move forward with one’s life. [Raphaell, 151][Hall, 259][Melody, 595]Lembo, 315][Ahsian, 351]
Selenite resonates with the Crown Chakra located at the top of the head. The Crown Chakra is a gateway to the expanded universe and controls how one thinks and responds to the world, and is the fountainhead of one’s beliefs and source of spirituality. It is a connection to the higher planes of existence and is the source of universal energy and truth. When the Crown is in balance, one’s energies are in balance. It enkindles the knowledge of one’s place in the universe and to see things as they are. It allows one to be unruffled by setbacks, knowing they are an essential part of life.
The white light from Selenite is also instrumental in activating the Etheric Chakras attuned to higher, more spiritually enlightened things. They provide a soul connection and the highest self-illumination, as well as a cosmic doorway to other worlds. They represent personal identification with the Infinite, and oneness with God, peace and wisdom.
Selenite Spiritual Energy
Selenite brings divine light into everything it touches and stimulates the clearest state of mind attainable, where all thoughts entering the consciousness come from the Source and are direct reflections of pure spirit. It is one of the best crystals available for clearing congested energies or negativity from one’s physical and etheric body, and for helping one consciously connect with the higher Self. [Raphaell, 151][101 Hall, 182][Simmons, 351]
Selenite is believed to carry the history of all that has happened in the world within its fine linear striations, and can help one connect with ancient wisdom and knowledge. It may also be utilized for accessing the between-lives state in order to view one’s progress made and to determine issues of this life and how they can best be resolved. [Raphaell, 151-152][Hall, 259][Lembo, 314]
Selenite is influenced by white color rays, those of cleanliness, purity, unity and innocence. The timeless, natural powers of the white rays are those of the moon, the color we see when the moon reflects the sun’s light to us. It is the color of natural cycles, birth, and regeneration - the feminine gender, manifested as the Goddess in many cultures. Just as the moon is our only illumination in the dark world of night, white talismans are of the spiritual world that is sensed but not seen. They are the guides to understanding and knowledge we don’t even know exists, and offer the color of freedom and hope.
Selenite is a calming crystal surrounding one with heavenly light. It is ideal for meditation and spiritual work, and is conducive for connecting with one’s higher consciousness. It may be used to align one’s awareness with spiritual master teachers, Ascended Masters, angels and spirit guides, or to access one’s past or future lives. [Melody, 594-595][Simmons, 351][Lembo, 314][Hall, 259]
It is recommended to gently stroke the crystal during the activation process or lie with a Selenite wand on the Heart Chakra pointing toward the head. If possible, place a second Selenite wand with the point just touching the Crown. When a meditative state is achieved, one is likely to experience visual images, making it possible to meet and receive advice and information from one’s spirit guides or guardian angels, or to view past or future lives to determine what may lie ahead (if one’s physical life proceeds in the direction it is now going). Often these visions are presented with one or more guides directing the message through a “story” that reveals the message symbolically. [Melody, 594-595][Simmons, 351][Lembo, 314][Hall, 259]
The Divinatory meaning of Selenite: A good chance of reconciliation, but you may have to make the first move. [Eason, 157]
Selenite may be used for scrying, to visualize the future or uncover the past. As Selenite holds impressions of events that have happened in its presence, it may also be used when the truth of an incident needs to be revealed. [Melody, 594-595][Hall En, 257][Raphaell, 152]
Selenite is a marvelous crystal for angelic consciousness. Use it in meditation to connect with your guardian angels, as well as archangels Auriel, Gabriel, Metatron, Sandalphon, Seraphiel, Tzaphkiel, and Uriel. [Lembo, 314][Eason, 157] Selenite varies in color from clear and transparent to a semi-transparent pearly white, more rarely with a tint of color due to inclusions. If your birthday falls in any of the following periods, a Selenite of the color listed can be a valuable conduit to your Guardian Angel. The table also provides the name of the Guardian Angel of those born in the time period.

Selenite honors Selene, the Greek Moon Goddess, depicted wearing a crown of the crescent moon, long robes, and carrying a torch. She travels the sky to guide and protect those in the dark. Women in particular associate with Selene, seeing in her the mystery and romance of the evening.
There are several ways to find an appropriate birthstone. The traditional one is listed first. These are from the popular lists that most people are familiar with. The second way is to find your natural birthstone by the color wheel of life. You can click on the Natural Birthstone graphic below to learn more. Finally many people use the traditional stones of the Zodiac.
In this section you will find information on all three approaches.
Selenite is not a traditional birthstone.
Selenite is not a natural birthstone.
Selenite is not associated with any Zodiac sun sign.
Selenite is a Guardian/Dreamholder Solidifier crystal. Selenite is a rare Guardian talisman, as they do not usually reveal their inner strength. They rarely form transparent crystals, but rather hide their strength behind an opaque mask, obscuring the power they possess. In the physical world Guardians are fantastic amulets for protecting your loved ones, your possessions, and your physical security. In the spiritual world, Guardian crystals serve to guard your beliefs against doubt, helping you keep true to your ideals and reinforcing your strength of character. Guardian crystals can also protect your spirits during trying and difficult times. Selenite is also a Dreamholder, a particularly powerful talisman used in focusing your energy to hold onto your dreams. It overcomes life’s obstacles by providing tenacity, perseverance and patience.
Solidifiers are a class of minerals that include the sulfates, and are the most powerful talismans for solidifying a relationship or new habit. They are used to add permanence to anything that is temporary. They are particularly useful in efforts to stabilize a situation and to help one maintain something they have worked hard to achieve.
Selenite utilizes Metal energy, the energy of intelligence, contraction, healing, and creativity. It is the energy of togetherness and crystallization - of ideas, concepts, and groups. It is hard, sharp, and often destructive, yet an essential element in all lives to find our way without being a victim of others. The metal element brings the power of concentration and determination to our lives and our dwellings. Use Selenite crystals to enhance any space that you use for concentration, gathering strength, or working with a group. Metal energy is traditionally associated with the northwest and west areas of a home or room. It is associated with the Helpful People and Blessings, and Travel area of your life and dwelling, and with the Creativity and Children area. Its energy of crystallization will solidify your efforts and determination.
Selenite in Ancient Lore and Legend
In ancient Mesopotamia, Selenite was used to keep sickrooms free from evil spirits. A banishing ritual at least five thousand years old describes the use of a paste made from bitumen and Selenite which the priests smear on the door of a sick man, and paint as images of apkallus, “sages,” upon the side wall, as well as the head and foot of the bed. The Selenite is Ninurta (Saturn, a positive deity) who chases the bitumen Asakku (a demon causing the illness). Ninurta uses the crystal powers with sound therapy and other deity figurines to do battle with Asakku until he is caught in a ritually created net and banished to the Otherworld. Once the spirit has been expelled something must be put in its place. As Selenite holds the divine light of the gods, it was used to fill the void so nothing else could attach. [101 Hall, 182][judyhall.co.uk][en.wikipedia.org]
A Kabbalistic creation myth explains that God was everywhere before the universe existed, but he had to inhale to create space for our world. In order for Him to be present in creation, he formed vessels of divine light to populate the universe; however, they shattered. As Selenite carries that light, its task is to reunite the shards of the divine with their source. [101 Hall, 182]
In the Medieval world, Selenite was said to contain an image of the moon and was believed to grow or shrink in accordance with the lunar phases. If carved with the two phases of the moon and worn around the neck, it was believed capable of inspiring love, safeguarded pregnancy and provided a good birth, bestowed peace and harmony, reconciled lovers, shrank welts, and healed those suffering from consumption. It was also claimed to protect thieves, keep sea travelers safe, especially from storms, to increase personal properties and to help obtain honors. Placed under the tongue on the first and second days of the moon, it helped one predict the future. Worn on the finger, Selenite made one worthy of honor and veneration and gave divine inspiration, and if it were enclosed in a gold capsule with parsley it would make bees fertile. [Lecouteux, 292]
The Alfonso lapidary claimed wearing Selenite cured epilepsy and would prevent attacks. It also said if it were hung on a tree, the fruit would grow and ripen more quickly. [101 Hall, 182]
In Pantagruel, the French Renaissance writer, François Rabelais, described the temple of the oracle of “la Dive Bouteille” as having seven columns formed of precious stones, with the first being of Sapphire, the second of Jacinth, the third of Diamond, and so on. The seventh and final column was described as being of transparent Selenite, “with a splendor like that of Hymettian honey, and within appeared the moon in form and motion such as she is in the heavens, full and new, waxing and waning.” [Kunz, 349]
