sodaliteIntroduction to the Meaning and Uses of Sodalite

Sodalite teaches the nature of oneself in relationship to the universe, like gazing into a star-filled sky and forgetting the darkness to grasp the innumerable points of light. It inspires insight, awakening, examination, and connection. Called the blue “Logic Stone,” Sodalite emits an easy, tranquil energy that clears the mind and elicits deep thought, expanding the ability to arrive at logical conclusions based on rational consideration. It enhances one’s powers of analysis, intuition, observation and creativity, and strengthens self-discipline, efficiency and organization. Sodalite does not stimulate wisdom, but rather clears one’s vision and intellect opening the mind to formulate wisdom. [Margherita, 536][Melody, 608][Raphaell, 153][Simmons, 368][Mella, 108][Hall, 272]

Sodalite is one of the densest and most grounded of the dark blue stones and is superb for meditation and deep journeying. It brings insights into the self and an honest evaluation of one’s motivations, strengths, weaknesses, gifts and patterns of destiny. It dispels mental confusion, stilling the mind to allow new information to be received, and brings an enlightened perspective on life. Sodalite increases consciousness, idealism, and striving for the truth, and eliminates guilt and fears better than any other stone. It helps one own and verbalize one’s true feelings and to stand up for oneself. It. [Simmons, 368][Raphaell, 153][Hall, 271-272][Mella, 107][Gienger, 81]

Named for its sodium content, Sodalite is a chloric sodium aluminum silicate with a harness of 5.5 to 6. It is classified as a feldspathoid and is well-known for its rich blue color intermingled with white Calcite, though it may also form as gray, yellow, green, or pink. Quality blue or blue-violet material is used in jewelry, while lesser material is more often seen as inlay or ornamental facing stone, and in carvings. Sodalite occurs typically in massive or granular habit, but can form rare transparent or translucent crystals. [www.gemdat.org][Simmons, 367][en.wikipedia.org][www.gemselect.com]

Sometimes mistaken for Lazurite or Lapis Lazuli, other members of the Sodalite family, Sodalite is a more traditional royal blue rather than the others’ rich ultramarine. It rarely contains the gold flecks of Pyrite common in Lapis, and unlike the even color of Lazurite, Sodalite characteristically displays white veining or mottled patches of Calcite, often with small black inclusions. It can further be distinguished from similar minerals by its white (rather than blue) streak, and its ability to fluoresce orange under ultraviolet light. It is often referred to as “poor man’s Lapis” because of its similar color and affordability. [www.gemdat.org][en.wikipedia.org][www.gemselect.com][www.controverscial.com]

Sodalite was first discovered in 1811 in the Ilimaussaq complex in Greenland, and gained importance as an ornamental stone in 1891 when vast deposits of fine material were found in Ontario, Canada. The most celebrated source is the Princess Sodalite Mine just east of Bancroft, Ontario, named in 1901 for the Princess of Wales, when during a royal visit to the World’s Fair in Buffalo, New York, she was presented with a gift of Bancroft Sodalite and was so captivated by it that arrangements were made to quarry enough to decorate her London residence, Marlborough House. In 1906, 130 tons of the rock were shipped to England to be used as a decorative stone in the Princess’ royal home. The lovely Sodalite from this mine varies in its intensity of blue and has a surrounding material composed of a grayish-white mineral called Nepheline; it is often referred to as Princess Blue, or its old trade name, Alomite. Other names for Sodalite are Blue Stone, Canadian Blue Stone, Canadian Lapis, and Glaucolite. hackmaniteHackmanite is a rare form of Sodalite that contains Sulphur and exhibits tenebrescence, the ability to turn a different color when exposed to the sun, and may be brought back to its original color when kept in the dark. Nicknamed “Chameleon Sodalite,” Hackmanite from Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, or Ilimaussaq, Greenland, is generally pale to deep violet when freshly quarried, but quickly fades to grayish or greenish white. However, Hackmanite from Afghanistan and the Myanmar Republic (Burma) begins as a creamy white but becomes violet to pink-red in sunlight. Left in a dark environment they will return to the original color. This phenomenon may occur rather quickly, but may take up to a week to return to the original color, and while the tenebrescence effect can be repeated indefinitely, it is destroyed with heat treatment. Genuine Hackmanite is not treated or enhanced in any way. [en.wikipedia.org][gemselect.com][mindat.org][www.controverscial.com]

In addition to the properties all Sodalites share, Hackmanite carries an extremely fine vibration while remaining connected to the earth. It activates a cosmic anchor and can open an in-body expansion to the infinity of being in order to integrate the lightbody. Known as the “Stone of Eternal Belonging,” Hackmanite’s purpose is to remind its wearer that everything has its own time and place, and to recognize all things have belonging. It is helpful for harassment, fear and apprehension, and assists those who are constantly in trouble from over-exuberance or the inability to read social signals to adapt to the reality of daily living. As a chameleon crystal, Hackmanite is a perfect charm for all short-term changes, such as working irregular shifts or frequently traveling through different time zones to rebalance one’s inner clock. It is marvelous for reaching deep meditative states and increases one’s ability to see spirits and family ancestors. [Hall II, 146][Eason, 384][gemselect.com]

Place on the Third Eye area to gain intellectual understanding and a clearer perspective of one’s self or a situation. Working with a Sodalite sphere helps correct aggressiveness towards others, as well as the self, and can reduce tendencies toward sadism or masochism. [Raphaell, 153][Hall, 272][Megemont, 200][Eason, 246]

A valued support crystal for women, Sodalite may be used to bring balance to the emotions and diminish outbursts brought on by PMS, menopause, or other hormone-related matters. physical healing crystal usesSodalite Emotional Healing Energy

Sodalite is a stone of truth, enabling the conscious and subconscious mind to connect with one’s thoughts and feelings, and helps one to recognize and verbalize those feelings and truths objectively. It allows the shadow qualities, those negative traits one dislikes about oneself, to rise to the surface to be acknowledged and accepted without judgement. Sodalite discharges anger and negative thoughts and empowers the release of core fears, phobias, guilt, and control mechanisms that hold one back. It creates a clear insightful mind open to finding inner peace. Sodalite enkindles self-acceptance and self-trust, and embraces the importance of remaining true to oneself. [Melody, 608][Hall, 272][Mella, 107][Gienger, 81][Megemont, 168-169]

chakra balancing with crystalsSodalite Chakra Healing and Balancing Energy

Sodalite resonates with blue crystal energy that stimulates the Throat Chakra, the voice of the body. It is, in essence, a pressure valve that allows the energy from the other chakras to be expressed. If it is blocked, or out of balance, it can affect the health of the other chakras. When the Throat Chakra is in balance and open, it allows for the expression of what we think and what we feel. We can communicate our ideas, beliefs, and emotions, bringing our personal truth out into the world. We have an easy flow of energy within the body and spirit. The energy that springs upward from the lower chakras can continue its path enabling free expression and natural release. Blue crystal energy will unblock and balance the Throat Chakra. Darker shades of blue encourage the power of truth, while lighter shades carry the power of flexibility, relaxation, and balance.

Sodalite is an awakener of the Brow Chakra, or Third Eye, the center of our perception and command. It directs our sight and everyday awareness of the world. Our consciousness is located here, and we relate to ourselves through this chakra. It balances the important and the unimportant, sorting meaning from data and impressions. It commands the energy flow within the body. When the Brow Chakra is in balance we see clearly and understand what we see. We can interpret visual cues and our perception is high. Our thoughts and internal communications within ourselves are healthy and vibrant. We are open to new ideas, dreams, and visions, and can control the flow of energy within all the chakras. The dark blue/purple crystals of indigo are used to treat imbalances of the Brow Chakra. It is a quiet color, one of mystery and wisdom and judgment.

spiritual crystalsSodalite Spiritual Energy

Sodalite is an extraordinary stone uniting logic with intuition, encouraging spirituality and deep thinking. It is highly effective as a guide on inner travels through meditation, dream work or shamanic journeying, and can provide one with access to the sacred laws of the universe. By calmly presenting ideas, insights into the self, or symbolic imagery from the subconscious, Sodalite stimulates thought and allows the subtle feelings to permeate the center of one’s being. It promotes multileveled understanding, and allows one to both “speak the truth” and “know the truth.” [Melody En, 745][Hall, 271][Simmons, Ahsian, 368][Megemont, 168]

Sodalite is an excellent grounding tool for channeling inspirational, spiritual, and metaphysical writings, keeping one’s focus on the Third Eye center. It assists in activating the six clairs – clairvoyance, clairaudience, claircognizance, clairsentience, clairolfaction, and clairgustation. As a stone of insight and pattern recognition, Sodalite is a support stone for astrologers, numerologists, tarot readers, as well as for those who consult the I Ching and other oracles. [Lembo, 324][Simmons, 368]

crystal color powerSodalite Color Energy

Sodalite reflects the blue color energy of the sky, as winter gives way to spring and the sun climbs higher each day. It marks the beginning of life and emotion. Blue crystals bring trust, faith, patience and respect, lending the focus we need to become more sincere, act more responsibly, and become more trustworthy. Light blue crystals help us accept the life we have, develop patience, reconcile differences, or seek forgiveness. They’re excellent for recovery efforts from addictions or destructive patterns, aid in curbing tempers, and help us become more dependable and cheerful. Light blue crystals also assist in dealing with grief, letting go of the past, and curing guilt. Darker blue talismans enhance the respect and compassion we have within ourselves. They teach us humanity, discretion, and honor, and encourage us to act more charitably and focus our efforts on service to others.

Sodalite also embodies the color indigo, combining the intuition of the violet ray with the trust of the pure blue ray. It brings wisdom, truth, dignity and spiritual mastery. A stone of judgment and long life, it promotes introspection and can result in profound wisdom when used well. Dark indigo crystals provide honesty and are especially good for religious and spiritual journeys, while light indigo crystals connect us to the natural world and improves our appreciation of others.

Meditation CrystalsMeditation with Sodalite

Sodalite is a perfect ally for meditation, clearing the mind and calming internal chatter, helping one to stay focused on the moment without being distracted by past or future concerns. This stone stimulates the pineal gland and Third Eye, and encourages a deep trance-like state from which one may gain valuable insights into the self without judgment, and an understanding of why one may find oneself in a current circumstance. Sodalite helps one recall and heal wounds of the past, perceive core lessons from this lifetime and understand where one is on the path to completing them. Sodalite also assists in remembering one’s dreams, and in practicing lucid dreaming. [Lembo, 324][Simmons, Ahsian, 368][Hall, 271]

There are several ways to find an appropriate birthstone. The traditional one is listed first. These are from the popular lists that most people are familiar with. The second way is to find your natural birthstone by the color wheel of life. You can click on the Natural Birthstone graphic below to learn more. Sodalite is an Enhancer Filter crystal. Enhancers have internal crystal lattices of perfect cubic symmetry and internal harmony. As “building block” talismans, their internal structure helps focus our efforts to build on our successes and enhance our lives. They concentrate our energy on the improvements we desire and thought patterns that will produce the actions needed to bring them about.

Crystals with the earth power of a Filter, absorb positive energy flow but work to keep negative energy away from us. They help us view the world in a “glass half full” outlook, to see the best in others, the beauty in life, and the good in humanity. They keep us focused on the positive in situations and to not be overwhelmed by the negative. In our technological world, Filters also work to keep harmful electromagnetic transmissions from sapping our energy and health.

Lore_and _legend of crystalsSodalite in Ancient Lore and Legend

As Sodalite and Lazurite are mineral components of the greatly revered Lapis Lazuli, they share not only its wonderful color, but its extensive history. In the ancient world nearly all deep blue stones were called Sapphire, Lapis, or Azure stone, and the historical lore would most likely have labeled Sodalite as Lapis. In ancient tombs and ruins, Sodalite has been discovered in places of ornamentation where Lapis Lazuli might have been expected. Sodalite was also frequently used by Egyptian priests to dispel guilt and fears, and to strengthen the power of mind over body. [Mella, 107]

Sodalite has also been discovered in the Caral-Chupacigarro settlement in Peru, where the people of Caral traded for Sodalite from the Collao altiplano. Caral is most ancient city of the Americas. Sodalite was also traded for at Lukurmata, a Pre-Columbian community and major ceremonial center in highland Bolivia. [en.wikipedia.org]
