Introduction to Sage

s2

Some sources list over 700 varieties of sage, others over 1000.  Some are used in culinary purposes by local cultures, some are used for medicinal purposes.  The most common is Salvia officinalis.  We will call it Common Sage and this article will limit itself to this variety.  (The use of White Sage, the Salvia apiana is considered a sacred sage by the Indigenous people of North America and its uses are considered by many to be cultural appropriation.)

T

Salvia officinalis is a perennial with blue to purple flowers.  It grows in many locals around the world.  The sacred number of common sage is 190. Its name is derived from the Latin word salvare, which translates to heal and to be healthy. During its blooming season, bees gather the nectar and genuine Sage honey commands high price, owing to its flavor.

Sage Magical Uses and Purposes

Common sage is an excellent herb to use when culture and rituals have to be observed.  When it is important to follow the rules, obey tradition, and “fit in” to local cultures in your work or travel, use common sage to honor the ways of others.

Some cultures believe Sage can see evil spirits away.  Today many pagan believers use sage brooms to sweep away negativity and evil spirits.

Sage is also a symbol of wisdom.  In Celtic lore, it is believed to improve memory and and help one grow in wisdom. The very word sage means a wise man.  Current research seems to support this belief in Sage's help with memory.

It is possible to use dried garden sage branches into garlands and herbal wreaths for keeping evil away from a dwelling.

Sage in conjure magic is used for uncrossing, mental clarity and removing the evil eye.

I

Sage for Chakra Healing

chakra healing

Sage is used to clear blockages from and balance the Crown Chakra.

The crown chakra is our gateway to the expanded universe beyond our bodies. It controls how we think, and how we respond to the world around us. It is the fountainhead of our beliefs. It is the source of our spirituality. It connects us to the higher planes of existence. It extends our energy beyond our body. It is the source of higher sources of information and universal energy and truth.

It is the source of our coordination – the relationship of movement between the parts of our bodies and the relationship of our movement through life.

When it in balance we are in balance. We are coordinated. We fit together. Our energies are in balance. We know our place in the universe. We are flexible, and we understand the ebb and flow of life. We see things as they are, and are unruffled by setbacks, knowing they are an essential part of life. We do not cling to outdated ideas or attitudes, but rather keep ourselves within the flow of life.

Color Energy of Sage

s6

Sage brings the spirit energy of Violet to us. Violet energy takes on the darker hue of winter’s majesty, the time just after the winter solstice. It inspires awe, and invites a feeling of mystery and magic, nobility and luxury. It is one of the most powerful rays in nature, helping us interpret our dreams and inspiring us to great deeds and accomplishments.  It brings passion and imagination, emotion and logic. It brings the deep vision needed to see the future. It gives us powerful insight and enhances our perception of the potential effects of our decisions.

Notes from the Masters

Outside of metaphysical uses, I love to use rubbed sage in my pasta sauce. It's packed with antioxidants and health benefits. Pasta sauce has a very bold flavor and sage can stand up to it in a pleasant way. Spiritually, I use white sage censing sticks or essential oils for cleansing my home office space when I notice I'm creatively blocked. Be sure to open a window when you partake in this benefit so the negative energy leaves your home.

Uses of Sage in Feng Shui

crystal feng shui yin yang - free crystal guides

Sage  brings Metal Energy  and Wood  Energy to Feng Shui practices.

Metal energy is the energy of intelligence, contraction, healing, and creativity. It is the energy of togetherness and crystallization – of ideas, concepts, and groups. It is hard, sharp, and often destructive, yet an essential element in all lives. We have to be sharp, unyielding, and hard at times to find our way without being a victim of others. The metal element brings the power of concentration and determination to our lives and our dwellings.

Metal energy is traditionally associated with the northwest and west areas of a home or room. It is associated with the Helpful People and Blessings, and Travel area of your life and dwelling, and with the Creativity and Children area.

The stalks and stems of Sage bring us wood energy.  Wood element energy is the creative energy of motivation, personal growth, and renewal. Like the time of the new moon and the Winter solstice - wood energy is new beginnings, hope, and rebirth Use Sage when you need the energy of the Wood element.

Lore and Legends of Sage

lore grimoire

Sage goes back to the ancient Egyptians who used it as a fertility herb.  It was then brought to Ancient Rome where its medicinal properties were developed. It was a popular treatment for sore throats and to treat wounds  It is still useful for these purposes today.  The upper classes of Rome had a special ceremony and robes for harvesting Sage.

In 812 AD, sage was one of the plants deemed so important that Emperor Charlemagne ordered it planted on German Imperial farms. In later times it was eaten to avoid the evil eye.  Root workers in the South carry it in a blue bag to aid in discerning wisdom in making decisions.  Burning sage leaves is believed to help with making good decisions. It is usually a key ingredient in any spell to reverse a hex.
