Orange sapphireIntroduction to the Meaning and Uses of Orange Sapphire

The enduring and alluring Sapphire forms in more colors than just the legendary blue. Each color exhibits its own unique metaphysical properties and vibrational patterns, yet all are Stones of Wisdom. They honor the higher mind, bringing intuition, clarity and self-mastery. Worn throughout the ages for protection, good fortune and spiritual insight, Sapphires are not only symbols of power and strength, but also of kindness and wise judgment.

Orange Sapphires, including Padparadscha Sapphires, bring the wisdom of loving creation from the heart to the world. Their joyful orange energies activate the Sacral Chakra, the seat of one’s sexual energy and the fountain of creativity. They align the will to create with the heart, encouraging one to revel in life’s sensory experiences and in the expression of ideas and artistic truths. Orange Sapphires and Padparadschas are solar stones, bringing warmth and physical comfort, and are connected to Mars, the planet of action. They impart vitality and strength of purpose, lending the ability to move forward with endeavors or stand firm in opposition. [Simmons, 342][Ahsian, 342]

Sapphire is a variety of Corundum, an aluminum oxide mineral that forms in prismatic tabular, bipyramidal or rhombohedral crystals, as well as granular or massive habits, and may be transparent to opaque. The name Corundum is of Indian origin, derived from the Sanskrit korund and applied to opaque massive gems, generally of a dull color. With the exception of Red Corundum, which is Ruby, all other colors of Corundum are Sapphires. [Simmons, 339][www.mindat.org]

Orange Sapphire owes its color to the additional trace elements of chromium and iron in its formation, and ranges in hue from pale orange to a vivid reddish-orange, or a deep orange with brownish overtones. Though once considered an obscure and underestimated gem, it has recently gained in popularity for its rarity and beautiful fashion color. Orange Sapphires are not mined in great quantities, so even stones with slight to moderate inclusions are still valuable gems. [www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com][www.palagems.com]

Padparadscha Sapphire, sometimes called Orange Sapphire, is a gem variety of Corundum with a unique salmon hue that ranges from a very pale pinkish-orange to a more vibrant orange with pink overtones. For decades collectors, dealers and gemologists have debated the issue of how pink or orange a stone in this category can be and whether some stones are too dark to qualify to be a Padparadscha. To date there is no agreeable standard for the color range. The name is derived from the Sanskrit/Sinhalese padma raga, meaning “Lotus color” and refers to the orange/pink color, similar to the Lotus flower. Natural Padparadscha is among the rarest and most highly prized varieties of Sapphire and has become a collector’s item, often bought as quickly as it is found. [Simmons, 339, 341-342] [www.wikipedia.com][www.ajsgem.com][www.mindat.org][thenaturalsapphirecompany.com]

Star Sapphires are created when Corundum is intergrown with fibrous inclusions of Rutile, called “silk,” that reflects light in stones cut en cabochon as a six-rayed, sometimes twelve-rayed star that appears to glide across the face of the gem as it is moved. This effect is called asterism and increases the rarity and value of the stone. [Simmons, 345][Eason, 365][Mella, 104]

Star Sapphire has the same metaphysical properties as the color of Sapphire it appears in, with an enhanced energy and intensification of those properties. The star itself represents the manifestation of Divine knowledge and Light into denser reality, and reminds us that the outer manifestations we treasure are a reflection of the Light of our own essence. The three lines that cross in the six-rayed star represent faith, hope and destiny, sometimes associated with three angels who offer protection to those who wear Star Sapphire. The moving star brings ongoing safety to travelers and guides their way home. [Ahsian, 345][Simmons, 345][Eason, 365]

spessartine uses Orange Sapphire Uses and Purposes

Orange and Padparadscha Sapphires are empowering stones for artists, writers, singers and all who wish to express their deepest truth in creative expressions. They facilitate Divine inspiration and assist in bringing one’s spiritual vision into manifestation. [Ahsian, 342]

Orange and Padparadscha Sapphires exude life-force and are powerful crystals for enhancing sexual energy and desire, and increasing fertility. [Ahsian, 343]

Sapphire is exceptional for calming and focusing the mind, allowing the release of mental tension and unwanted thoughts. It encourages opening the mind to beauty and intuition, bringing lightness and joy as it restores balance within the body. [Melody, 584][Hall, 253]

As a professional support stone, Sapphire provides awareness of higher principles in archeologists and historians, stimulates the mind and wisdom in executives, ministers and writers, and increases discernment and good judgment in journalists and lawyers. [Mella, 129-133]

Star Sapphire, especially in paler shades, is a symbol of wise and honest leadership, and a good stone for businesswomen and female entrepreneurs who wish to succeed without compromising integrity. [Eason, 365] It is also an ideal tool for anyone needing assistance in grounding their ideas into reality and who requires extra energy to bring things through to completion. [Simmons, 345]

Because of its hardness (second only to Diamond), Sapphires are used in industrial applications such as components for watch crystals and movement bearings, scientific instruments, high-durability windows, and insulating substrates in special purpose solid state electronics. [www.widipedia.org]

chakra balancing with crystalsOrange Sapphire Chakra Healing and Balancing Energy

Orange and Padparadscha Sapphires are highly activating and purifying to the Sacral Chakra, or Second Chakra, located below the naval and above the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. It controls the flow of energy and is the center of gravity of the body. It is the center of the Life Force of the body, and controls the flow of information from the body to the mind and from the mind to the body. Gut feelings, intuition, and other “non-linear” communication comes from this chakra. When it is out of balance the symptoms manifest themselves as confusion, over dependency on others, repression of feelings, inability to feel joy, fear of sensuality or sex, and frustration. When the Sacral Chakra is in balance one has grace, feels pleasure in life, and experiences the flexibility to “go with the flow” and do so in good spirit.

The Padparadscha’s pink color energy also stimulates the Heart Chakra located near the center of the breastbone. It regulates our interaction with the external world and controls what we embrace and what we resist. It gives us the balancing ability to be ourselves within the environment, and helps in our relationships.

They stimulate higher vision, opening the mind for inspiration by Divine revelations, communications and experiences. They ensure that one’s creative expressions are aligned with the heart, and the manifestations serve only the highest good in the world. [Ahsian, 342]

Meditation CrystalsMeditation with Orange Sapphire

Padparadscha, whose name refers to the Lotus blossom, is an excellent meditative tool for discovering “the jewel in the lotus.” For this meditation, Robert Simmons in The Book of Stones suggests placing a pendant or unset gem of Padparadscha at the navel, or a couple of inches below, to energize the Second Chakra. Visualize this chakra as a Lotus flower the color of the stone, and focus more deeply on the flower until the jewel at its center is found. Then go within the jewel to its heart, to discover the fiery nugget of pure consciousness and life force, and merge with it. [Simmons, 342]

Lore_and _legend of crystalsOrange Sapphire in Ancient Lore and Legend

In antiquity, Diamonds and Rubies were divided by the Hindus into four castes, or classes, and being a Corundum of unique reddish hue, Padparadscha was called the Oriental Ruby, a Brahmin of the highest caste. The possession of a padmaraga, or Brahmin Ruby, conferred perfect safety upon the owner, and as long as he owned this precious stone he could dwell without fear in the midst of enenmies and was shielded from bad fortune. However, great care had to be taken to keep this Ruby of the first class from contact with inferior specimens, as its virtue would be contaminated and its power for good diminished accordingly. [Kunz, 102-103]

Though many of the Sapphires were appropriated by other names and little is written concerning them, they were well-known and highly valued in the ancient world, used by the Etruscans over 2,500 years ago and prized in ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt. [Simmons, 339] The term “Sapphire” with no color prefix attached to it refers to the Blue Sapphire and has an extensive history of legends and lore, much of which appears on our Blue Sapphire page. Other colors of Sapphire were called the same name as a popular gemstone of that color with the term “Oriental” added, thus the Oriental Amethyst was actually a Violet Sapphire, the Oriental Emerald was a Green Sapphire, and an Oriental Topaz was a Yellow Sapphire. Padparadscha was an Oriental Ruby, while Pink Sapphire was a Ruby that had not yet “ripened.” Others may simply have been mistaken for another mineral or were discovered too recently to have historical reference.
