black sapphireIntroduction to the Meaning and Uses of Black Sapphire

The enduring and alluring Sapphire forms in more colors than just the legendary blue. Each color exhibits its own unique metaphysical properties and vibrational patterns, yet all are Stones of Wisdom. They honor the higher mind, bringing intuition, clarity and self-mastery. Worn throughout the ages for protection, good fortune and spiritual insight, Sapphires are not only symbols of power and strength, but also of kindness and wise judgment.

Black Sapphire brings the wisdom of confidence in one’s own intuition. It is a grounding stone, one of protection and centering, of both the body and inherent energy forces. It deflects negativity from others, especially as a Star Sapphire, and provides a calm strength in high stress or chaotic situations. Black Sapphire shields those with mediumistic or clairvoyant abilities, and is excellent for dispelling doubt and relieving anxiety and sorrow. It is also reputed to be an effective talisman for seeking and maintaining employment. [Melody, 586][Hall, 253][Eason, 202]

Black Sapphire is a variety of Corundum, an aluminum oxide mineral that forms in prismatic tabular, bipyramidal or rhombohedral crystals, as well as granular or massive habits, and may be translucent to opaque. It most often forms as black or brownish-black, though sometimes may be dark green, dark brown, or gray in color. The name Corundum is of Indian origin, derived from the Sanskrit korund and applied to opaque massive gems, generally of a dull color. With the exception of Red Corundum, which is Ruby, all other colors of Corundum are Sapphires. [Simmons, 339][www.mindat.org][Fernie, 140][Eason, 202]

Star Sapphires are created when Corundum is intergrown with fibrous inclusions of Rutile, called “silk,” that reflects light in stones cut en cabochon as a six-rayed, sometimes twelve-rayed star that appears to glide across the face of the gem as it is moved. This effect is called asterism and increases the rarity and value of the stone. The Black Star of Queensland, discovered in the 1930’s, is believed to be the largest Star Sapphire ever mined, weighing in as a finished gem at 733 carats. [Simmons, 345][Eason, 365][Mella, 104][www.wikipedia.com]

Star Sapphire has the same metaphysical properties as the color of Sapphire it appears in, with an enhanced energy and intensification of those properties. The star itself represents the manifestation of Divine knowledge and Light into denser reality, and reminds us that the outer manifestations we treasure are a reflection of the Light of our own essence. The three lines that cross in the six-rayed star represent faith, hope and destiny, sometimes associated with three angels who offer protection to those who wear Star Sapphire. The moving star brings ongoing safety to travelers and guides their way home. [Ahsian, 345][Simmons, 345][Eason, 365]

spessartine uses Black Sapphire Uses and Purposes

Black Sapphire helps keep you calm in chaotic situations or with chaotic people, and makes an excellent anti-panic crystal if you are overly sensitive to others’ quarrels or during times when everything goes wrong and you have no way to put things right. It guides the intuition in determining what, if anything can be done, while still allowing others to take responsibility for problems of their own making. [Eason, 202]

Black Sapphire shields against bullying and unreasonable anger from others, and protects against fear and intimidation. It brings a calm strength in establishing boundaries, or the courage needed when it’s time to walk away. [Eason, 202]

Wear Black Sapphire for stressful or demanding careers, especially those dealing with human tragedy, such as the armed forces or rescue services to deflect negativity, sorrow, shock and horror and to allow you to deal with difficult matters in a compassionate way. It should also be kept or worn by healers who work with very sick or terminally ill patients to relate to their needs without becoming over-empathetic and taking on their symptoms and sorrows. [Eason, 202]

Black Sapphire helps adults overcome fears of the dark, but is not considered a good crystal for children. It is, however, loved by cats and may be rubbed on their paws to prevent them from straying at night. It also amplifies protection when working with nocturnal power animals. [Eason, 202]

Black Star Sapphire is especially powerful for contacting the deceased, and in providing safe mediumship. It also guards against judgment, those with everyday jobs who are developing mediumistic or clairvoyant gifts with the hope of turning professional. [Eason, 202, 365]

Star Sapphire is also an ideal tool for anyone needing assistance in grounding their ideas into reality and who requires extra energy to bring things through to completion. [Simmons, 345]

As a professional support stone, Sapphire provides awareness of higher principles in archeologists and historians, stimulates the mind and wisdom in executives, ministers and writers, and increases discernment and good judgment in journalists and lawyers. [Mella, 129-133]

Because of its hardness (second only to Diamond), Sapphires are used in industrial applications such as components for watch crystals and movement bearings, scientific instruments, high-durability windows, and insulating substrates in special purpose solid state electronics. [www.widipedia.org]

chakra balancing with crystalsBlack Sapphire Chakra Healing and Balancing Energy

Black Sapphire stimulates the Base or Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine. It controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and movement, and is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the body. When physically out of balance the symptoms manifest themselves as lethargy, low levels of activity, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation. When spiritual energies are out of balance, one may feel flighty, disconnected from reality or distant. When the Base Chakra is in balance, the physical body regains its strength and stamina, and the spiritual energy is rekindled in the form of security and sense of one’s own power. It often leads to independence and spontaneous leadership.

Black crystals also honor Cybele, the Roman Earth Mother and Goddess of Wild Animals. She was originally Phrygian, the Goddess of Caverns because they are dark and hidden. She embodies the fertile Earth. Her festival is the first on the Roman calendar, the Festival of Joy.

All Sapphires honor Juterna, the Roman Goddess of the Brooks and Ponds, and Turan, the Etruscan Goddess of Love and Beauty.

Seekers contain a crystal energy structure that aligns the natural energy of the crystal to the natural power of the human mind to find the way to new horizons and new capabilities. They’re pointers, directors, and compasses; the fresh start crystals. These are talismans of the scientist, the adventurer, the hunter, wanderer, and explorer. They’re also crystals of the student and the researcher.

Transformer crystals enhance efforts to change our situations, prospects, health, outlook or relationships. By transforming ourselves we transform our lives. Lore_and _legend of crystalsBlack Sapphire in Ancient Lore and Legend

Because of its power to influence spirits, Sapphire was honored more than any other stone by necromancers in conferring with the dead to foretell the future. They felt it enabled them to hear and understand even the most obscure oracles. Witches were also reported to love this stone for working certain wonders by its virtue. [Kunz, 104-105]

The Star Sapphire, also called Asteria, has often been referred to as a Stone of Great Destiny. Some cultures believed the three light bars which cross to form the six-rayed star on the surface of the gem represented Faith, Hope, and Destiny (or mission). The Cingalese believed the moving star served as a protection against witchcraft of all kinds, and in German lore it was called Siegstein, the stone of victory. The mere sight of the stone was reputed to bring good luck, and as a guiding gem, it warded off ill omen and the Evil Eye. It was said to be so potent it continued to exercise its good influence over the first wearer even after it had passed into other hands. [Mella, 104][Kunz, 106-107][Simmons, 339]

Historically, Blue Star Sapphire was given on a twenty-sixth wedding anniversary, Gray Star Sapphire was given on a sixty-fifth, and Purple Star Sapphire was given on a sixty-seventh wedding anniversary. Star Sapphire was also known in Oriental culture as a “phenomenal gem” to be worn on Tuesdays. Phenomenal gems exhibited a moving line, star, or changes on the surface as the light varied, and was considered to bring good fortune to the wearer. [Kunz, 333-335, 337]
