Introduction to Meaning and Uses of Moonstone

moonstoneAs ancient as the moon itself, Moonstone holds the power of mystery. Its secrets are locked beneath a pearly veil, and with them, our own hidden truths. Only within its reflected light can we begin to understand what it has to teach us. Moonstone is foremost a talisman of the inward journey, taking one deep into the self to retrieve what is missing, the parts of the soul left behind or forgotten, then brought to light. [Simmons, 267]

Since earliest times, Moonstone has been a tangible connection to the magic of the moon – an amulet of protection for travelers, a gift of lovers for passion, a channel for prophecy, and a path to wisdom. Our ties to the moon are strong. As it waxes and wanes in cyclic perfection, it creates the tides and rhythms of our mother, Earth, and influences our behaviors, emotions and spiritual growth. Moonstone calms and encourages, teaching us the natural rhythms of life.

Moonstone has been used in Roman jewelry for nearly two thousand years, even longer in the Orient. It has always been a sacred stone in India with a special significance for lovers, and is a traditional wedding gift there. It was a popular choice for jewelers in the Art Nouveau period, and in Europe was believed to reconcile estranged lovers and to cure sleeplessness. Moonstone is known as the Traveler’s Stone for the protection it affords, especially at night, and because of its uplifting quality of hope, has long been worn as a talisman to enhance the personality. [Ahsian, 267][Mella, 91]

Named for its moon-like sheen, Moonstone is a Feldspar mineral exhibiting a soft, watery opaqueness and a silvery-white reflection called chatoyancy that moves as a line across the surface as light varies. Moonstone occurs in delicate shades of peach, blue, gray, white and a prismatic variety known as Rainbow Moonstone. In addition to the general properties of all Moonstones outlined in this article, the following crystals have additional focuses.

Blue, or Cat’s Eye Moonstone, promotes clarity of the mind and inner vision, keeping one focused while in a meditative or altered state of awareness. It is particularly helpful in seeing emotional patterns and life lessons, and in balancing yin and yang energies.

Gray Moonstone is a stone of perceiving beyond the veil – useful to the clairvoyant and shaman, and in moving one into unseen realms. It is called the “New Moon Stone” and carries the mysteries and powers of the new moon, where all things exist as potential.

White Moonstone carries the energy of the new moon at the height of its power, stimulating psychic perception, vision and dream work. It can magnify one’s emotions, activating the kundalini energy in women and emotional balance in men, and is supportive in children to drive away nightmares or insomnia.

Peach or Yellow Moonstone supports the heart as it stimulates the mind, soothing worry or anxiety, and bringing out the best in people. Its loving energy promotes the Divine in all situations, and is an emotional support for intuitive or sensitive children.

Rainbow Moonstone acts as a prism, diffusing energy throughout the aura. It provides psychic protection, clearing the mind and senses, and aids in lucid dreaming and calm sleep. It deflects negativity and eases emotional trauma. Aligned with the Goddess, Rainbow Moonstones connect with the energies and spirits of Nature, from plant devas to galactic consciousness.

metaphysical uses Moonstone Uses and Purposes – Overview

Legendary as the Traveler’s Stone, Moonstone is especially protective of those who travel by night or upon the water when the moon is shining. Frequent travelers should keep one in the glove compartment for safe night driving and as protection against road rage. [Mella, 91][Eason, 42]

Moonstone opens the heart to nurturing qualities as well as assisting in the acceptance of love. It is an excellent crystal for first or new love, and is a comforting talisman if love must be kept a secret. It was also believed to be able to reunite loved ones who had parted in anger. [Mella, 91][Eason, 43]

Moonstone is also the stone of love and eroticism, stimulating the kundalini energy and carnal desires. It is the ultimate fertility crystal. A Moonstone necklace worn during lovemaking at full moon harmonizes the body into the natural lunar cycle. [Megemont, 128][Eason, 145] Or, for fidelity or fertility, make a grid of thirteen Moonstone crystals with a circle of the twelve months around a bedroom, and one centered under the bed. [Eason, 40]

As a professional support stone, Moonstone aids dancers and artists in their self-expression, inspires the heart and feeling in executives, and helps educators in sharing activities. It enhances self-acceptance in waiters and waitresses, and promotes sensitivity in psychologists and secretaries. [Mella, 129-133]

Peach Moonstone is particularly consoling to anyone who feels helpless because of weight problems, and should be worn to encourage one to love and value themselves for who they are, as is, and to assist in separating food from emotional needs. [Eason, 99]

[Melody, 417][Hall, 191]

Moonstone can act as a growth stone for children and teenagers, and has been thought to slow the degeneration of the elderly. It may also alleviate degenerative conditions of the skin, hair, eyes, and the fleshy organs of the body. It is useful in treating insomnia and creating beneficial dreams. physical healing crystal usesMoonstone Emotional Healing Energy

Moonstone has long been known for its calming, soothing qualities on the emotional body. Its energy is balancing and healing, assisting in the mastery of emotions by bringing them under the control of Higher Will, rather than expressing or repressing them. It also helps identify emotional patterns that are stored in the subconscious, and serves as a guardian to contain explosive passions, and to stimulate confidence and composure. Moonstones can be placed at the center of the chin (the Moon Center) to create this balance. [Raphaell, 149][Megemont, 128]

Moonstone bestows a depth of feeling, a gentleness within the self that brings happiness to the environment in which it resides. Associated with the feminine, it enhances the intuitive side of the mind. To women, Moonstone reveals their feminine power and abilities of clairvoyance, and gives rise to the kundalini energy. Moonstone helps men become more in-tune with the feminine aspects of their nature, and stimulates the right side of the brain, encouraging nonlinear thinking and emotional balance. [Gienger, 59][Melody, 417][Ahsian, 267]

Moonstone is especially calming to children. It soothes those away from home at night, drives away nightmares and encourages sleep. It is also used to treat sleepwalking. [Eason 145][Gienger, 59]

chakra balancing with crystalsMoonstone Chakra Healing and Balancing Energy

The white crystal energies present in all Moonstones have an association with the Crown Chakra and our spiritual center. They represent personal identification with the Infinite, and oneness with God, peace and wisdom. [Raphell, 164]

The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head, and is our gateway to the expanded universe beyond our bodies. It controls how we think, and how we respond to the world around us. It is the fountainhead of our beliefs and the source of our spirituality. It connects us to the higher planes of existence and is the source of universal energy and truth. When the Crown is in balance, our energies are in balance. We know our place in the universe and see things as they are. We are unruffled by setbacks, knowing they are an essential part of life.

Moonstone cleanses and dispels negativity from all the chakras, and provides supplemental energy and support in balancing the physical, emotional, and intellectual bodies. It provides spiritual nourishment and sustenance to assist one through all changes. It is also a useful tool in radionic analysis and treatment to help pinpoint problem areas. [Melody, 368, 417]

spiritual crystalsMoonstone Spiritual Energy

Always sacred in India, Moonstone was the stone of the gods and goddesses, of hope and spiritual purity through denial of the ego. It combats materialism and strengthens the faith of religious people in all cultures. Hermits, monks and other contemplatives withdrawn from society for spiritual reasons, find a special affinity for Moonstone. [Megemont, 128]

Moonstone opens the mind to hoping and wishing, inspiration and impulse, serendipity and synchronicity. It brings flashes of insight, keeping one from negatively banishing possibilities. Yet it grants intuitive recognition and allows one to absorb that which is needed from the universe and not necessarily what is wanted. [Hall, 191][Melody, 416][Gienger, 59]

crystal color powerMoonstone Color Energy

Moonstones carry White color energy, the embodiment of cleanliness, purity, unity and innocence. The timeless, natural powers of the white rays are those of the moon, the color we see when the moon reflects the sun’s light to us. It is the color of natural cycles, birth, and regeneration – the feminine gender, manifested as the Goddess in many cultures. Just as the moon is our only illumination in the dark world of night, white talismans are of the spiritual world that is sensed but not seen, the guides to understanding and knowledge we don’t even know exists.

talisman uses

Moonstone Amulets and Talismans

Known as the Traveler’s Stone, Moonstone has been an amulet of protection since antiquity. It is thought to be most powerful at night and especially on the water when the moon is shining. [Mella, 91]

As a gem, Moonstone signified hope to ancient man. Because of this uplifting quality it was a popular talisman or amulet for enhancing the personality. [Mella, 91]

Moonstone is a powerful Barrier Filter. Barrier crystals have incredible abilities to help us focus and amplify our efforts to keep undesirable elements out of our lives. Its crystalline structure gives it strength in all directions, allowing it to provide barriers to attack from all directions simultaneously. Crystals with the earth power of a Filter, absorb positive energy flow but work to keep negative energy away from us. They help us view the world in a “glass half full” outlook, to see the best in others, the beauty in life, and the good in humanity. They keep us focused on the positive in situations and to not be overwhelmed by the negative. In our technological world, Filters also work to keep harmful electromagnetic transmissions from sapping our energy and health.

Moonstone utilizes Metal energy, the energy of intelligence, contraction, healing, and creativity. It is the energy of togetherness and crystallization – of ideas, concepts, and groups. It is hard, sharp, and often destructive, yet an essential element in all lives to find our way without being a victim of others.

The metal element brings the power of concentration and determination to our lives and our dwellings. Use white crystal energy to enhance any space that you use for concentration, gathering strength, or working with a group. Metal energy is traditionally associated with the northwest and west areas of a home or room. It is associated with the Helpful People and Blessings, and Travel area of your life and dwelling, and with the Creativity and Children area. Its energy of crystallization will solidify your efforts and determination.

Lore_and _legend of crystalsMoonstone in Ancient Lore and Legend

An Asian myth declares the best Blue Moonstones are washed up by the tides once every 21 years. [Eason, 237]

The Romans believed the much treasured Moonstone enclosed the image of Diana, the Moon Goddess, who could endow love, wealth, victory and wisdom upon the possessor. Other legends declared it contained the gifts of prophecy and second sight, claiming Moonstone could clear the mind and allow the wearer to reach wise decisions, and keep heart and mind in touch with each other. [Mella, 91]

Moonstones have been known to lose their silvery luster if their owners continued to hold within themselves a lot of anger. [Mella, 91]

In ancient lore, Moonstone was considered to be a talismanic gem of winter, and in Oriental culture was known as a “phenomenal gem” to be worn on Mondays. Phenomenal gems exhibited a moving line, star, or changes on the surface as the light varied, and was considered to bring good fortune to the wearer. [Kunz, 326, 333-334]

In observance of wedding anniversaries, Moonstones were considered the gift of choice on the thirteenth year. For this number, and for succeeding multiples of thirteen, the gem was believed to counteract the evil influence of the number. [Kunz, 337]

Moonstone is the object of special veneration in history as a sacred stone of India. According to earliest traditions, the stone had been set, from the beginning of time, in the forehead of the four-handed god of the moon. Partly from its color, and partly from the influence of the deity it represented, it grew and lessened in luster simultaneously with the waxing and waning of the moon, gaining it the name it still bears, “The Moon-Stone.” [Fernie, 334-335]

As a sacred stone in India, Moonstone is believed to bring good fortune and is never displayed for sale there except on a yellow cloth, as yellow is an especially sacred color. It has a special significance for lovers, believed to arouse tender passion, and allowing them the power to read the future, good or ill, that is in store for them. However to gain this knowledge, the stone must be placed in their mouths while the moon is full. [Kunz, 97-98]
