THE STORY: Morrisonite, like many minerals or rocks, is named after someone associated with its discovery or early mining. Morrisionite is a form or quartz named for James Morrison, who for a half century has made his home in a canyon of the Owyhee river some six or eight miles above the discontinued post office of Watson.
Julian Field of The Gem Shop was one of the first to bring the material to the public. His history of Morrisonite is on his website. Reading there you will learn that this material is found with difficulty, and was found only in a single location. The area we understand is now closed, so new material is not expected to be available.
There is also a great story of Morrisonite on The Rare Rocks and Gems site by Philip Stephensone. He notes there that it is called "The King of Jaspers. " Well, it is sublimely beautiful, very hard to find, and extremely expensive if you can get someone to part with any, so it might well be the King. Don't believe me? Do yourself a favor and check out Philip's Morrisonite collection. Simply amazing, and stunningly beautiful. Don't' miss it.
